Speedmaster intake porting. Hopefully I can make something out of this

Geee, that looks familiar.
I used some of Edelbrock’s Gaska-chinch to glue the gasket on. It’s just like rubber cement.

That’s not bad. I’ve had to fix way worse than that. And then core shift bites you in the ***...sometimes you live with it and sometimes you get the TIG out and fix it.

Let’s just say I look forward to working on it and do realize it isn’t horrible at all. At least the center divider wall is pretty much right on.
 
I like the finish, but how do you get the carbide thoughts out??? That’s the biggest issue I fight. No matter what I do, the walls are always wavy and there are troughs and ridges I can’t get smoothed down with a burr, so I hit them with a paper roll to get all that in shape.

My technique with the burr must suck.
I don't think it's as much the technique that sucks as the hands. Seriously I wonder how you get it done sometimes without losing control of the grinder due to lack of feeling. As you know you ain't as young as you used to be lol.

Really enjoy the threads pbr, It's much more fun to just scroll through other peoples porting threads. But I will say it is still a motivator to get out the grinder on my buddy's spreedmasters, and I can use all the motivating I can get!
 
It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but how does your burr finish compare to say...a 40 grit or 60 grit paper roll, or is it rougher than that?

Just to be clear, I don’t feel my unsanded finish is what guys like Meaux and Speier are referring to when they’re talking about “burr finish”.

I’d say it “feels” smoother than it looks.
But not as smooth as what they’re like after I’ve done the sanding.

Thanks. That’s why I asked, because I really can’t tell surface finish all that well from a picture. I’m definitely going to try a rough burr finish.

If I had my own Dyno, where I could do what Larry Meaux did and flog an intake with a sanding roll finish and then pull the intake off, burr finish it and go right back to the dyno I would. Using a third party dyno makes that expensive, plus you’d be using their air and dirtying up their shop with grinding dust and crap.

If not for a giant PRICK that now lives in Iowa, I would have a dyno, he would have made money and there wouldn’t be a dyno like it west of the Mississippi. But that PRICK is a lying criminal. If he ever stops by here he will read this, and know it’s me, and know I’m talking about him.

Still pisses me off almost 19 years later.
 
Hey John, how about a short video clip showing how you move the tool while you’re working. Your technique, if you will.
I tend to work up and down more than in and out. Just curious how some of you more experienced guys “handle your tool”......lol.

Struggling to stay engaged today. Thankfully I started earlier today and accomplished some work today. Between getting over Covid, election results, cloudy winter day in Pa, and laziness it’s harder some days than other. That an I guess I really don’t enjoy plenum work. Going to try getting into an exercise routine this weekend. Matt and I both always run a 1 inch spacer on our Victor340 intakes and run a lean out valve off of it into both our cars for warming up our cars (alcohol) easier.

I can say grinding intake manifolds is a suck job, and it should pay about what head porting does. I mean, 750 bucks to do a single 4 should be the minimum, but most guys only want their heads ported and never think an intake needs work. And they leave a TON on the table.

It is nice when you get done though. You know you’ve made serious improvements.
 
Ok guys I guess I’m happy with this intake tested on Ethans Speedmaster heads. It petered out a little at mid lift and I’m pretty sure I know what it needs but because it will be going on a set of Edelbrock heads that flow 318cfm I’m not touching it till I flow it on those heads. This is going on a stock 360 (cut down to Chevy size) crank engine that will run 9’s in my car. I will probably be opening up the intake face on this intake for those heads. If you remember my 200cfm by .300 lift is beat even with the intake bolted on. It sure does make the speedmaster intake look pathetic.

Very nice, however a pain in the butt to do!

So looking down through the carb flange it seems all the dividers to the ports are rounded. I know people talk about smoothing things when porting and no sharp edges, but that seems like an area that might benefit from a sharp edge to sped airflow down the port?

Yaaa I had some time in this one and can’t wait to really put it to the test. I’m not a believer in sharp edges. I guess I always keep a picture of airplane wings in my head. Nice and rounded on the leading side thinning down on the rear. Needing volume and access to the air you really can’t use this principle to a tee but I sure like radius’s.

Good example, never thought to tie a wing profile to that, but it makes sense. I’ve seen ported heads in the past, but have never seen a ported intake up close let alone have anyone explain what they were doing.

It’s been noted before air and fuel do not seem to like sharp, corners, dividing walls, turns, etc....
There are some interesting videos and notations in books in this. Seems weird though right?! It just goes to show that not everything is working with your logic. I guess that is what makes science so cool. You never know until you know.
