Hey so im freshening up a slant thats seen afew modifications, it has mild cam in it and a long ram intake manifold from aussie speed, its got a QFT 450 carb and i need a new dampner. Did some reading through the /6 forums and there seems to be a debate on what kinds of dampners to use for what year becuase of different manufacturing processes in the crank. So i got a 70s valiant and im assuming the engine and crank are the same year what balancer do i use? Can i just snag a generic preformance one or should i go hunting for a specific one. I got like 3 months on this build so sending mine off to be remade isnt really in keeping with schedule.

All slant sixes both cast and forged cranks are internally balanced, so you don't have to worry about THAT. From there, it's simply personal preference. For general street performance, I would get something like this.

DODGE PowerBond PB1001N PowerBond Premium OEM Replacement Harmonic Balancers | Summit Racing

If you think that's not enough, there's always this. There are American dealers as well.

Romac Performance Series Harmonic Balancer : Steel/Steel : suit Slant 6 225ci (timing case with spot-welded timing tab)

Thanks for the quick reply and while i do like the look of that balancer and the clean timing marks its too rich for my needs ill go for the plain one i got a white marker and afew free weekends.

Yeah, those are really for more race bred engines. You'll be hard pressed to find a better bang for the buck than the one from Summit. It's a decided step up from stock. That's what I would use. Now, on my long rod build, I am going for the Romac. lol

Now.....another option. The big block Mopar internal balancers are completely interchangeable with the slant six. Of course, you will have to remark it, since the marks are in a different location. Big whoop.

Also, the diameter may be larger, but that can be worked around as well.

Eventually ill see about building up my slant to race its a really neat little engine, learned allot about them this last year. Bought mine off a guy who had allready tossed abunch of money into it but lost the drive to work on it. Right now i just use it to get to work so i dont need to be racing anyone, but once i get some money saved up ill see bout pepping her up some more.

So was wondering if there's a slant harmonic balancer I can run two belts off of. didn't think about it back when I put up this thread but I'm running both my alternator and my power steering off this pulley. Or maybe there's an alternative way I can set it up to run it all off the single belt.

It doesn't take a different balancer. You need a P/S pulley. It bolts onto the front of the balancer. Similar to the A/C pulley, but it bolts onto the back.

Oh sweet where would I be able to snag one? Should I ask around on here or is there a company that makes them?

I had mine redone by damper dudes, you say that you have 3 months to get your build done, it only took about a week and a half round trip. And I sent in 2 dampers, my /6 one and my son's 318 one at the same time. There's another company, damper doctor, never used them but also in California, haven't heard anything bad about them. Both would be them rebuilding your original one. On both sites they show pix of various dampers by their in house part number system, and I seem to remember an industrial slant damper that has 3 belt grooves cast in, it was pretty salty compared to the normal car/truck one. But then again that's what you'd have to send them as a core to begin with.
Regarding cars and trucks, as I remember, there are only 3 dampers used over the years. 2 for cast crank that differ by where the timing mark is, as Mopar changed the location of the timing mark on the cover and 1 for cast crank models mid 76 and newer.

Hey fellas, this isn't a sale or parts wanted thread.

The big block dampers will fit the crank, and timing cover, but if I remember correctly there will be issues with belt alignment. The slant six damper has the alt belt in the middle of the damper. The big block damper has no provision for any belt on the damper. All bolt on pulleys. Not a issue on a race motor, but can be a pain on a street car
