What plugs should I start with?

Whatever the book calls for in whatever brand you prefer. I would just stay away from stupid gimmicks like E3, Splitfire and all that type junk. I normally choose Champion, NGK, Autolite or Motorcraft.

Wait, doesn't the NHRA use E3 plugs :) They can't be all that bad...........

I was being sarcastic! I tried one of them years ago in a lawnmower...It ran like crap. Put the Champion back in

I tried them in an 08 Jeep Wrangler with the 3.8 V6. It drove the computer nuts throwing code after code. I've seen people put them in other things with no benefit at all.

I was hopin maybe you were bein sarcastic. lol

Autolite 63 or 65's? That's what I remember :)

one is for 318 the other 340 but I forget which is which. I would guess the 63 is 340 65 is 318 but it could be other way round.

Champion, Autolite, NGK, whatever. 2 steps colder from stock. IMHO.

Unless you raise compression substantially (1.5 compression points or more) you're not doing yourself any good to go to a colder plug.

I tend to agree with this. Then you put a bigger cam in and the cylinder has less pressure and with it a lower stat as well. Start with a stock plug and go from there.

The Champion 12 is equivalent to the NGK 5. Unless the engine is going to continous heavy loads [ circle track racing? ], there is no need for a colder plug. The original Honda 750 m/cycles came with Champion R6s & had points ign. You were lucky to make it around the block before they fouled...NGKs lasted a lot longer.

NGK introduced the copper centre electrode about that time. Other companies rubbished the concept, copper would melt, yada, yada...
Now, they all use copper....
