Most parts are available but limited.
The engine is at a friends place that specializes in vintage bikes. He was amazed at how nice it was inside !
I had him split the cases and put new seals in just because it had been sitting .

Oh it is going to be ridden ! Vintage MX is in April .

You going to make the trip all the way over to Woodland? Of course, that’s a winter series that ends in April IIRC.

I dont think I will have enough seat time for that race. But my buddy that talked me into this might want to go .
Maybe ? ...lol
Now I am talking myself into it !

March 20th ... Hmmm .

"
It was said they were always skint. Brad Lackey said he would have won the world title sooner if he was on a Maico He was over in Scotland last summer as somehow a club managed to persuade Scotlands largest land owner to let them run a meeting on his front garden at his castle He has got a large garden! Brad was doing a Q and A session in the beer tent and I wish I had asked him about saying that about Maico years a go Never thought about it at the time Brad said that night that he wanted $1million to defend his title in 1983 Suzuki offered $750 000 and he turned it down and retired So with the money involved you can see why Maico could never afford one of the very top riders"

The old Maicos were feared & revered, I wish I had my old one back. I'm probably too old to handle it now days & besides, I don't heal as fast as I used to. LMAO

Just don't fall ! Lol
And buy good gear

For readers that are wondering what I meant by Maicos history I will explain .
Maico was taken over by the 2 sons at some point and the son in charge of ordering hubs and gears from vendors decided they could save some moneyby skipping the heat treating process .
Wheels were exploding and gears shredding on many bikes in '83. One racer was killed ... warranty claims were costing them a fortune ! All of this followed the 1982 issue of miscalculating the linkage geometry and shock length on my model (Alpha1).
So Maicos went from being the most revered and feared MX bike in the world to bankruptcy in 2 short years !
1981 Miaco 490s are still considered the best open class MX bike ever !
I had posted the documentary video about it, however it seems to have been removed?

ha, nice to see some german bikes over there! i got a 501 one time, was in very rough condition but powerful enough to get me in trouble. Love yours, have fun with it!

Don't know much about bikes, so why two rear sprockets?

Those old trail/street bikes like this Trailmaster or Honda Trail 90 had one low ratio sprocket for trail chugging and 1 high ratio for street speeds.

This Yamaha has a top speed of 58 ish mph using the little sprocket and probably 30 with the big sprocket.
You actually have to add a few links when you switch to the big sprocket.
They are still under the seat with all the original tools and manuals . I even got the unused extra key !

Looked like a street cruiser to me, so I didn't think about the second sprocket. Now I see the high exhaust pipe and knobby tires.

Because three strokes is too many, and one is not enough.
