66' Barracuda and 273 with headers

-
Hedman will make you a set of Husslers for ~$600 now, that is like half price of some of the other headers out there. They are full fenderwells though but probably outflow anything under the chassis. There is a thread here that mentioned that price and how they are special order, no refunds. Have you considered Magnum logs? Flow well, compact and cheap. get the early 2 1/8 outlet models.
Manual steering only on the Magnum manifolds... sounded like OP was going with power steering.

I have 2 real D/Darts. One has a modified 273 race engine with some unknown fenderwell headers. The other has a 380 hp 360 Mopar Magnum crate engine with Doug's D450 headers. Supposedly, the crate engines were putting out around 405 hp so it would be around your build. With that much hp, I would go with the Doug's. They are pretty easy to install. I did have to shim the motor mounts up a little bit. There are a could videos on YouTube of me backing them out of my garage. Look under 1966 LO23.

Sweeeeet 66 ddarts ! any specs/details on the 273 build ...we All would sure appreciate ? I'm looking to build a stout 273 as well as others do too.

I have no idea what was done with the engine. I was able to find and install the original carb, carb spacer, choke cable and air cleaner assembly. All are one off parts. I believe it has a higher lift cam than what came in the car. The tortion bar cross car bracket was hacked up to get the unknown brand headers it. I would not go that route.

Never seen to much on a built 273, I'd look at 4.8l LS and 2v 4.6l fords for inspiration.

Here's a 450 hp 273 they talk a bit about the build on this thread

I bet you have see this one .

Is there a few of these? I swear about 2 years ago at Lebanon Valley that car was in the car show during the Mopar Sunday.
Lebanon Valley, NY approx Sept mid month. I should look as I took a few pics of that car.

I new a guy, John B. back in the early 70's that had a 67 Dart GT 273 4 barrel, auto trans. Him and a real good buddy of mine Bob V. built that car into a low 13 screamer, the engine had home ported heads by John, and if I remember right it had around 12 to 12.5 to 1 compression, .500+ lift solid lifter cam, 1 5/8 cheepy headers, a Fairbanks converter, and a reverse manual valve body in the 904, and 4.30 gears in the 8 3/4, with 8.00/14 cheater slicks, and it was always shifted well north of 7 grand. That Dart put quite a few 327 and 350 Camaro's and Novas to shame. It was a fun car to ride around in on a Friday or Saturday night.

P.S. My vote is the Doug's 1 5/8 D-450 Headers or if you don't mind cutting out the fender wells, see if you could order a set of Hedman Husler 1 5/8 fender wells.

Anyone know if hedman made 1 5/8" fender wells headers for early abodies ?

When I bought my 1 7/8" Hedman's fender wells for my 66 Dart back in 1999 they only had 2 sizes 1 7/8" and 1 5/8", I never knew they made 1 3/4" tube fender wells.

I don't believe it's a 273. @ddartdude would know for sure.

I had one set of fenderwell headers I moved to several 64-65 Barracudas back in the day, and they were 1 5/8 tubes. They were either Hedman or Cyclones, but I can't remember which? Last time I saw em was when I sold a rough old 65 Barracuda that I stuffed a 340/727 into. It smoked like a tar kiln, but ran like a bat outta hell! The main thing I remember about those headers was, you had to cut the brace between the front frame rail and the rocker panel to make room for the collector. Good riddance to those lousy things! LOL :realcrazy:

If it was mine, it's isn't, I would get a get of 340 manifolds, have them extrude honed and ceramic coat them. But that's just my 2 cents worth. I would never cut the car for fenderwell headers.

Well, I gave it a few days to see what the chicken coop says. I’m pretty happy with the discussion. SN: I have a rather large chicken coop and plenty of chickens- so no dis-respect. It is amazing how many sayings actually mean something in the real world.

So I’m going back a few post. So the goal with this automatic is a street able stall. The overall plan is a street-able 273 that is not a pig to drive. The idea is to make horse power with simple procedures and not rely on special high lift cams or crazy compression. The pistons are above deck pistons under 11 to 1 range. Because the bore is smaller - you can run pump gas with higher compression. The heads are the 66’ Commando closed chamber heads with great porting, bowl work and I believe oversized 5/16” flat head valves. ARP bolts everywhere, custom made head gaskets, wind age tray, possible valley pan. Cranks is steel 273 with a lot of polishing. Balancing to the weight of a hair. Again- friction is our enemy.
I would like to find a set of 1-5/8” headers to 2” collectors. I may end up making a set in my welding shop. As for oiling mods- with mechanical rockers and cam- we are researching that as we speak. 6,000rmp is probably going to me what I am aiming for on limiter. All depends on Dyno results. Builder wants this finished up in a few weeks So I should have numbers before spring.

You said the Doug's Headers D450s don't work with power steering, but their site says they work with power steering. See "Applications and Footnotes" Doug's Headers D450 1 5/8

I have set I bought for that reason, but they're not installed, so I can't say.

Status update:
So I ordered Doug’s D450 ceramic coated on Friday and was told 6-8 week wait. Bummer but I get it.
Here are a few photos of the engine. I got a few things wrong with original thoughts of the work being done at Larry’s machine shop on Groton, CT. Here is what was done so far to the engine.
Custom pistons- rings are grouped closer together and ring tension is 18lbs vs factory 27lbs.
Piston skirts were shortend- pistons are forged. 11.0-1 then valve notches added.
Block was squared up to Insain measures before .040” bore was done.
Rotating assembly was lightened and crank balanced - more weight was removed from crank due to pistons are so light.
Heads are next but not completed- waiting on mechanical cam to arrive to set valve spring pressures. Those are the closed chamber early 273 heads - bowls polished, ports cleaned up and new valves seats viton seals.

In an earlier post, you mentioned custom head gaskets. Can you share who they are being made by? My 273 is being machined right now, and I am using 302 heads on mine. My builder and I were discussing the problems with using head gaskets designed for open chamber heads, and having a one size fits all fire ring. If they haven't made yours yet, maybe they will make 4 of them cheaper than 2 at a time....lol.

Cosmetic makes multilayer steel gaskets. They are usually thicker compressed thickness than the composite gaskets available. Thinner gaskets with the perfect bore size don't make much difference in compression. The original 273 gaskets were embossed single layer steel and haven't been produced for years. They were a interesting design that the bores were not a perfect circle.

well your engine is no long to 273 specs ....4" bore... it's a 340
