Looking for some input on what the factory placed under the cargo area carpet on the flat floor section. Was it a hardboard material similar to the spare tire cover in the trunk area? Was the carpet glued or just laid down on this piece? My floor panel had indoor/outdoor carpet glued directly to the sheet metal panel. I 'd like to do it correctly with the new carpet. Any comments and pics would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it had ever been messed with but my 67 had the carpet directly glued to the metal panel. Looked like they just lined the outside of it with spray adhesive and then made a few S patterns with it in the center and that was that.

Personally if I was doing it myself, I'd put some sound deadening on the floor below it or at least under the carpet. Couldn't hurt unless you're doing a 100% factory restoration. It's not like anyone would ever know it was under there.

My 69 was the same way.

i've seen photos that show a cardboard like underlayer below the carpet.

My 68 still had the factory carpet over the cargo area, and when I took it out there was a pad glued down to the metal that looked just like the gas tank pad only it was in the shape of the cargo area. I will take a picture of it when I get home so you can see what it looks like. This is a 68 fastback.

Whatever was there was pretty thin, mine was quite baked, this picture is from 1983, don't have a better one.

Sorry guys I mis-informed you. There was what almost looked like roofing tar paper only a little heavier glued between the floor and the metal screw down cargo piece, the carpet was glued right to the top of the screw down metal cargo piece. Look at the picture you can see where it was glued to and how long it was because of the cleaner and dirtier areas.
