How do you store your "stuff"...

-
You really need to look around and do some purging. My brother is pretty bad. His place would drive me crazy. He realized after watching some hoarding shows he had issues and he did get rid of a lot. But it’s still a mess. But right now he has a lot on his plate. I’d help him but he’s in MO and im in Bama.

Not gonna lie, that might be me too. I have far too many interests and they creep up on eachother.

Cars
Woodworking
CNC
Drones/RC aircraft
3D printing

So there's a LOT of stuff I "might need someday".... it's a problem I recognize and one I need to deal with. organizing what I have will be step one. Then when I find stuff I haven't touched in years, out it goes.

Moving twice in the last 3 years helped with my clutter. Live in the previous place over 25 years. Remodeled 3 homes. I had stuff. Sold my Dart this past year and got rid of more stuff. Now I need to go thru my tool boxes and get rid of crappy tools. Got new wrenches for Christmas. Anybody need some bikes?

If by "bike" you mean Harley, lets talk :)

Tools have to be in there place or jobs take twice as long. Our giant tool box is full. My son bought a large commercial Garage and 5 1/2 acres. Everything for Engines and fab shop are being moved. Then the parts for A-bodies come out and some sold off.

Yessir, that's one of my problems. Tools scattered all over. i don't have nearly that much but I have enough that it's a problem. One thing i'm doing is exactly what you're saying. Organize my tools by function/use/purpose and put things away I don't use often like plumbing/construction stuff. I do have a 16/16 shed I'll make use of but that needs cleaning too. Mostly large items that have been tossed in there since we moved in 3/5 years ago.

Many years ago I went to a place that sold used office and factory equipment. They had industrial shelving and I bought 3 or 4 for about $30 each. The corner posts are HD angles and the shelves attach with short 1/4-20 screws and nuts. They are in my basement and full of parts, tools and other junk.

Also have a couple 4 drawer file cabinets I got for free from offices I've worked at. These are also good ol' HD Made in USA cabinets, not Chinesium junk. I keep my good stuff in there. With the electronic age and so many places going out of business, there's got to be a lot of this available cheaper than what you find at big box stores.

George Carlin had a bit about "stuff". When your house gets full, move to a bigger house.

My best buddy stores his "stuff" in zip lock bags in his freezer.

Carlin was the best.... Not sure your buddy and I have the same "stuff" to store...

I'm going through this right now, too- my "winter project".
When I built my shop (almost 10 years ago, now...) I built it as big as I could and could reasonably afford. I promised myself to keep things organized and useable...
Then the house needed a roof, then siding and windows, then... you know the story. With each project the shop became the "staging area", storage area, work area, etc. Now completely overrun with crap from non-automotive projects. Finally enough was enough. Pitched everything non-mechanical. Got all my tools cleaned and back into their chests/cabinets/boxes. Parts are getting bagged and tagged- cardboard tags on wire ties- sharpie marks on duct tape, totes and plastic bags tends to wear off kind of easy. Then stored in the loft according to use/application. Small parts in metal drawers and pigeonhole racks. Big parts like rear ends go on racks I built on the walls. Engine blocks/transmissions on small mover's dollies that fit under benches or in the corners. Steel shelving for heads/manifolds and such.
EVERYTHING labeled. I've come to the realization that someone else (wife/friends/kids) is going to have to deal with some of this stuff at some point (just being realistic) and if I don't want my "legacy" to end up in a dumpster I need to be able to make it easy for the stuff to find new homes. Not to mention that it just plain makes things easier for me, too.
Hopefully this spring I can get back to cars, skinned knuckles, cussing and drinking.

I've spent some time recently organizing nuts and bolts into plastic bins. A couple of years ago I was given two large HEAVY shelf units which have helped. What's really going to help is getting my second garage built with the small shop area attached. The garage will be a standard two-car which is all the room I have. Finishing the two cars will also help.

I've been in a lot of garages, no two people organize the same, but there are some commonalities. I am seeing toolboxes, peg boards, "book cases", totes, shelving units... all excellent and useful, I don't know that I've ever been in a home garage that is being used for anything but car storage that didn't have most of it.
When it comes to tools, probably one of best things you can do is: everything in it's place and a place for everything. The next thing IMHO: make time to clean up and put it all back where you found it every time you are out there.. getting and staying organized takes time, but it will payoff in the long run. I know I have wasted a lot of time searching for a tool that I used 3 days ago and didn't put it back where it belonged.. :BangHead::BangHead:

Thanks ,My company moved and they sent me to the old building to throw away things. 8 forty yard dumpsters. I scored all the cabinets and stainless there. I sanded all cabinets and draws and sprayed with red Rustoleum mixed with Urethane paint hardner . Little trick I learned. It dries much faster and retains the gloss better.

When restoring my cars I would work until I could not find a tool. Then I would then stop and put everything away and start the whole process over again. You get things done so much faster when you know where everthing is.

True dat.

So here is my solution for all the little stuff. A el cheap tool box and then I bent up a bunch of 16 ga alum. Basically just one 90 degree bend to create a foot if you will. A dab of silicone on the bottom so that I can rearrange should need arise. The bench behind one of our more famous FABO members feeding my hound Hemi has large heavy casters mounted on it, so I can roll it out of the way. Really really opens up room as the bench’s simply roll, I do it to most all benches.

I agree, roll around workbenches are one of the best things I've done to my work area. Is that you or your twin brother Fred in that picture. Lol

Nice bench ornaments... Semper Fi...

I had a ton of parts a few decades ago. It was a glorious day when I found that I had sold/gave away 95% of it. OK so I gave away 80% of it. 95% of it all was just GONE!!!!! I had gotten rid tired of it. Parts everywhere. If I had it all back now, so much would sell and for a fair price and quick. Not some of the stupid chit we see now. I had visions of just having a couple of finished cars and some spare parts for those! Yea right!!!!!
