Help an idiot fix his carb

-
You don't need to drill anything with the right linkage added. I see my recommendation has fallen on deaf ears so screw it.

LOL, I caught your drift but it aint my carb.
That fact about the different linkage was the best part. :D

Gee guys, sorry im not as intelligent as you on this other linkage, so how about cluing me in on it?

I would think if it wasn’t drilled it wasn’t supposed to be. Mismatch of parts. Tig it back, drill straighter with a tiny bit first and slow

I dont know. I have another carb with the same 9077s number i am running on the car right now and it does have the idle speed screw, thats the only difference in the 2 so im not sure what the deal is or what this linkage is they are talking about. I will try to find another site to ask for help as i dont want to start any more trouble here.

Hush up dummy. Yer just as intelligent as anybody. See that screw Kitty has her finger on? THAT'S the idle screw for TQs that don't have the tab drilled that you drilled. Yours may be missing that whole piece. Pay close attention to it. It goes ALL the way back and attaches to the choke linkage so that when the choke closes, it causes the linkage to jack the idle up at the screw Kitty has her finger on. If you have that linkage, you DON'T need the tab drilled, tapped and with a screw in it. The screw Kitty is showing IS the idle screw. Maybe post a picture of yours?

Mine does have that screw..I thought it was only for the fast idle adjustment only? So its also for the regular idle? WTH..makes sense but what has me confused is i have another 9077s on the car now, same carb, only difference is it does also have the idle screw.. so i may be confusing the quadrajet with this because they do have a separate fast idle screw adjustment from the rgular idle screw..but any idea why 2 identical carbs but 1 has the separate screw and one does not? Just trying to learn, thats why im asking. I appreciate the help!

No problem. You know I'm gonna help if I can. I gotta poke you with the stick. You know I love you man. LOL Some of the TQs had the screw in the tap you tapped. Most I've seen do not. And yes, that one screw is for fast and regular idle.

I really appreciate that man! A little background, back 20 years ago i was deep into this when i built my dart. I started a job in the auto industry in 2005 and quickly lost interest in cars..lol..so my dart sat for the most part. well, my old spark ignited for mopars here lately so im back into messing with my dart, but i have forgotten a lot of what i knew. Heres the bad thing. ok, there was a guy on moparts back then named Demonsizzler and he was THE thermoquad guru. When i built my 440 i contacted him on what i needed to do to make mine work with a cammed up engine. He usually charged a good bit to modify a thermoquad to work well with a built up engine, but he generously told me everything to do to it after telling him my engine specs. I did what he said and that carb does absolutely great on my dart! Well, i had notes of everything he had me do and i cant find the darn things as its been so long, so im trying to remember as im building this new one. I still have all the specific drill sizes for the primary and secondary jets and have drilled those, and the drill for the pump shot squirter, but it seems like he also had me drill the secondary spray bars BUT im not positive..He has not been heard from on moparts since 2012 i believe so no luck contacting him. So, will have to just try what i have and see how she does.

yup thats him. hes a good guy. someone on moparts said that he retired and sold all his thermoquad stuff to scott with harms automotive, but wasnt positive.

He may have. I'm not sure. He's gettin older like the rest of us so who knows? I found him on facebook and sent him a message and friend request.

Im glad that hes still around then. I always get nervous when someone dissappears from these forums. Like i said, that guy wasnt sure about the whole retirement thing, just what he had heard..

Hang on pal, that 9077 likely was used in conjunction with the Electronic lean burn computer. It would have had a throttle closed switch on the passenger side and a lever bolted to the primary throttle shaft on the passenger side, and THAT is where the idle speed was set. Without the ELB computer in good working order and all related components including the throttle closed switch known to be fully functional. You’ll need to drill and tap at the spot you originally started. If you try to set the curb idle using the fast idle weighted screw, the fast idle will be too high. Also you most likely will not have a vacuum advance port. You will have to drill (straighter) that also.

I'm not trying to argue with you, but I've run them for DECADES with just the one idle screw and they idle just fine fast idle and hot idle. Worst case if it does idle high, he can remove the idle cam and file down the fast idle step.

what i really want is an older, early 70's thermoquad with none of the emissions crap, and the 1 1/2 primaries to build up..Most started with a '6'..if any of you have one you would part with for a reasonable price, shoot me a message

What he said.
Not upset at all, just poking a little fun at ya as politely as I can.
Rusty and I are both smart asses.
He just does a better job of hiding it. :D
No worries, you’re in good hands.

Cool, i appreciate yalls help! Very thankful to have this site to come to!

I looked in m inside pile and didn't have a 9077s. I'll look in my outside pile tomorrow.
Piles? I would have a blast at your house with piles of thermoquads! I dont know why i like these carbs so much..lol..

Rusty: I treat mine nicer that that. They get bent and damaged when put in piles. I have mine hanging on the walls and packed away in boxes with packing material. I think I had about 65 of them at one time. I realized that I was never going to use all of them, so for awhile now-I've been getting several friends to convert over to TQ's.

I say "pile" in the metaphoric sense. lol
