Power steering gear box leaks (pictures)

Wow 2 months. That tough, especially with Spring season around the corner.

So I successfully changed out the seal and will put it all back together Thursday.
Does the gear spline at the end of the shaft receive any special multipurpose grease? Looked like a little axle grease might work there.

Also, any tips putting it all back together or just the reverse order of install?

Can I top off the reservoir with the Lucas power steering stop leak since I have a bunch left, or properly put Power Steering fluid in it?

And most importantly, is there any way to test if the new seal fixed the leak prior to putting everything back together? I hate to have to punch the roll pin back in only to have to drive it back out later.

Thank you to all you guys for helping me get this done my first time. I can’t imagine what shop hourly labor would be doing this.
Hey you didn't lose the pin, good job. Lol. Make sure the splines are clean and use a little grease them. They should slide back together easily. If they don't it means they are not lined up properly. It's a very close fit. It helps if you have someone inside the car and outside the car. Don't think there is any way to test it until it's back together. Which technique did you use to remove the seal?

I used a method I saw on another thread. 1/8 drill bit slowly and then a dry wall screw. With a pair of pliers pulled on the screw straight not to jar metal on metal and it came off.

I used the 1974 manual and with chalk went a little overboard and drew a straight line on the column metal from the firewall all the way to the ps gear box. Hope it goes in straight!

Shoot, nobody even told you to make sure you marked it so as to keep everything straight and not move anything. :BangHead:

Hi Mako 21, nice looking Dart and good job on the repair. I recently moved from Miami to Pembroke Pines. Hopefully when this COVID thing clears up, we can meet with our Darts. Ever been to the car meet and greet at Kendall Drive and SW 117 Ave, by the Cuban restaurant / Publix? Maybe Pedro will bring his Dart also.

Hey Coolvibes, that’s not too far from me. I’m in Palmetto Bay. Yes, would like to go to that meet. I saw another Dart the other day. Really nice convertible, white GTS around 1968 model year.

What days does the meet at 117 and Kendall meet?

Google "americaonwheels.org, and then carsandcoffee". Apparently it's a nationwide thing, so others can also go and see hosting locations and times close to them.
