Hi all,

I had to buy a (shiver:eek:) square back alternator for my 67 Dart to get it back on the road while I locate a reputable rebuilder.

I know I know the square back is better, but I want a round back.

I have 3 cores and 4 pulleys to choose from.

Anyone know of a good rebuilder. I have been talking with one but it is pricy. I don't mind paying a premium for quality work, should be the last alt I put in the car.

Yes I could rebuild it myself but I don't have a press, the time or the desire.

Thanks

Luckily my machine shop guy is a life long Mopar owner and was excited when I wanted him to press out/in the diodes. He searched and found the special tool he made for the press that he had not used in 20 years :).... So far he has done 3 for me.

I also wanted to keep the round back. I asked around and found a mom and pop independent starter/alternator rebuilder.
Luckily the son knew right away it was a roundback Mopar alternator (he was about 50 years old).
He got right to work on it, and got it charging for only $35.
I will ask him to clean it up next time when we aren't in a rush.
So, ask around, you should be able to find someone who appreciates what you are trying to accomplish.
If not? Maybe Jims guy in AZ would take in yours and ship it back?

Yours is original to the car, right?
Ask they don't sandblast it. Ruins the surface appearance and obscures the date codes etc.

If you use half wore out glass beads and lower pressure it polishes it up nice and does not soften the edges of the raised/stamped areas (date codes, part numbers, etc).

I am sure he would. He would just need the housing and the diode block. He also can pull the pulley and change the front bearing too. He is over on the FBBO site (old Super Bee owner). He has a bead blaster and could carefully bead blast the housings for you too. Oh he keeps wanting to turn the brush slip rings on an armature but so far mine have not needed that :)

Unfortunately not. My dad's log book entrys go like this:

1978 137940 miles
1980 163177 miles
1981 188500 miles
1990 291026 miles
2018 316151 miles

All my cores are well sandblasted, all but one which is a 65.

Here's the one restored. I am waiting for the one they put brushes only in to take a dump before I install this one. It was really nasty with 50 years of crud on it and no longer working before I took it to dave and he totally rebuilt it. bearings diodes yada yada everything replaced. Look at it now! Me likely!

Another pic. i wouldn't shout him out if i wasn't impressed with the value and workmanship. thats two alternators for 50 bucks including tax. he even found a double pulley and installed it on the other one for me. it was a single pulley and i needed a double for my air c

A 1967 would use a one wire field and not a two as in picture. If you don't have A/C, then you probably want a single pulley. Diodes rarely go bad.

I use these guys, they are local to me and make their own windings in house...

They do a good job, not a bad one yet... They come through when AutoZone had 3 bad ones in a row...

I have a local shop here that rebuilds starters and alternators. He has done a couple of round back for me. Good job on them but cost is more then $50

I will have to drive there. Was all face to face.
Hey Joey. If you dont mind, can you post or PM the shop you use?
There's no one close to me on this side of the Delaware.
I was looking for a grease seal last year and had to borrow one from another roundback.

And if IIRC a dual can have a different ratio than a single pulley. So that can really change performance - not always for the good.
I had one local shop (whom I'd never recommend assuming he was still in business) do a swap to a pulley for a large belt to keep the ratio (maybe?) but make it less likely to fly off. That's the sort of quick and dirty things that can be done to fix problems. Of course doesn't always make it right or good.

One of my cores (from 1990) was on the car when my dad passed away. It worked fine but was a 2 pulley. The charge indicator bounced a lot at idle.

I replaced it with a single pulley ( the one the last failed) the charge indicator did not bounce at idle.

Difference... 2 groove was 3", 1 groove was 2.7", parts book calls for 2.5". It would probably charge with the headlights and brakes on at idle with a 2.5".

The square back I bought for the time being, bounces at idle... 3" single groove pulley.

So size does matter and sometimes smaller IS better!

I had mine rebuilt by Sound Starter and Alternator Rebuild. Been in Tacoma, WA since 1974. Excellent work, easy to work with. A one man shop and it's all he does. soundstarterandalternator.com It's a local business for me so if I can be of any help let me know. I specifically wanted a stock amperage alternator after a misadventure with a pretty alternator that turned out being over 100 amps. He tested all my cores, labelled them by output and rebuilt the one that I chose

Ok, so stopped by the store today, obviously closed. The website is not up. I heard the old timer passed away, but his son is keeping it going. I'm posting the phone number below, but not sure how much shipping or mail orders they will be capable of doing.
In the meantime, if anyone calls and speaks to the son and they have something you guys need, I don't mind picking it up and ship it to you. They are only 10 minutes away.
