That is not too far from me. Any idea what year it is or if they would sell parts?

I can get photos next trip up , I just came back today I live in Hampton GA during the week pm so I don't forget please I can get photos and possibly contact

I just came back to GA this evening I work down here during the week next trip up I will try to get photos and info as long as the owner doesn't act like [ Buffalo Bill ] on silence of the lambs !!!
PM me your info so I want forget thanks Chris

i don't think anyone's mentioned it but have you thought about the 'same' 4" stroker in the 318 you already have? 390 ci so not much smaller than the 408 you're considering and you won't need to buy a 360 to build. just a thought
neil.

Good Idea I also know where a roller LA 318 and Magnums (5.2 ) are that can be had for $100 apiece
In Ballground GA

Not a bad idea, but I already have several 5.9's on hand. I am going to use one of them and use all the factory hardware and computer.

Am I the only one wondering why you would want a 408 in a motor home ?
Why not just build a nice 360 with an RV cam ?
Save the 408 for a street car.

First reason that comes to mind is torque . The second is torque .
And the third is torque.

Its already set up for a small block and he has the 4.0 crank and OD trany . Its a no brainer . With the right cam and headers you should be able to get close to 500 ft/lbs at a reasonable rpm . I wouldn't mess with the Gear Vendors the OD in the trany should suffice.

Is that the one sitting down over the bank in the Kudzu vines, in the Nantahala Gorge?
I have a house on Wayah Rd @ the top I come down and take a left at stop sign and head into town its on the right just before Radio Shack and also has a 60s model Corvette in the same yard both just setting there waiting on the Rust Gods to take them.

People are :realcrazy:. If you take Hwy 28 out of Franklin, towards Fontana Lake, turn left on 64/74 towards Nantahala Gorge where the rafters and paddlers go. There is an old Travco on the right, down over the bank that is covered up in Kudzu vines....and may be being used as a chicken house. Sad.

I dont think the noise will be an issue . Those Cummins are pretty quiet under load . But the heat and fit would be a hassle . Not to mention you will need to change everything in the driveline .
Trany , driveshaft , ujoints , gears ....
and cooling.
A torque tuned 408 with the correct cam would seldom see 5k and everything would fit nicely. All you would need is the 518 and a shorter driveshaft . Remember you will just be cruising along around 2800 rpm 99% of the time.
I think my 408 build would fit your RV to a tee. It will be torque monster. And makes makes max torque low in the RPM range. So says Desktop dyno. Cannot get a appointment on a engine dyno to run it, but still trying...3:55 gears with GV unit in 66 Dart...

What cam are you running?

Ok now that i have read all of this.
first off i had a class C dodge motor home and it had a 318 in it 727 transmission. Ran 4000 rpm all day long at 65 miles an hour. Was amazed at how well it pulled the hills.
yours has and over drive transmission, will it hold up to the extra torque of the stroker?

I like the GV to split gears as well as overdrive. splitting gears is going to be more help them you may thing.
Overdrive to get the rpm down to what the stroker want.
Much bigger transmission cooler
Much bigger radiator. ( The fan is not going to be spinning as fast as it did with the 318, but will be making more heat).
Us your stock exhaust manifolds(headers will make more power but will make much more heat in the eng compartment.(which will be overheated all the time.
If it don't have a fuel return system, make one...............you said fuel injection.....this may not be as big if an issue.
free flowing exhaust. 3" exhaust with large 4" lone muffler/s if you can fit them in there.
Make sure your transmission is up to the task. The 318 moved that big o thing with HP aka RPM you stroker will be using much more Torque to get the job done.

Now that i have said all of that, finding a motor home that has a 440 and 727 would be way cheaper and stronger.
I do like the magnum stroker with fuel injection:thumbsup:

Well, cheaper I have covered. The guy gave me this RV just to get it out of his place. I have stroker stuff on hand already. As far as stronger, this RV has the same M400 dodge chassis whether 318 or 440 from the factory. The 518 can be built to handle the torque, it is still mostly a 727 after all.

I want the fuel injection for traveling at varied elevations, and the parts availability and reliability of the serpentine set up. I will have a huge aluminum radiator with a pair of electric fans, trans cooler, and probably an oil cooler as well. I run a similar set up on my high top conversion van, and brought average running temps down from 200+ to a rock steady 180.

I had to pull the fuel tank and pump from the van last week. New OEM fuel pump has and aux port built in already-perfect for running the generator in the rv. The tank is side saddle riding inside the frame and should be easy enough to mount in the RV. Two of those 35 gallon tanks should give plenty of range.

As far as the headers go I have considered having them jet hot coated. I'll cross that bridge when it is time. I need to see if something I have on hand will work first before spending any money.

I have heard that the trick to getting a 518 to live, is to buy a good, heavy duty purpose built converter. If you get headers coated, there is a place near Hickory, NC called Calico Coatings. They did a set of TTI's for me, and I ran them for 8 years. They looked as good the day that I sold the car, as they did the day I picked them up at Calico! They do a polished ceramic coating on the outside, and a thermal barrier coating on the inside.

I would even ceramicoat the inside of stock manifolds if you ran them . But headers coatsd inside and out would be my choice.
Maybe some shorties ? I see those dirt cheap on CL from time to time.

First key to getting any auto trans to live is keeping it cool. Giant a/m cooler in this case. If needed the cooler will get its own electric fan to keep trans temps in line. I'll be looking for a 518 gas burner converter with a billet face and heavy duty clutch similar to the diesel version. Shift kit to stop shift delays, extra clutches, better bands, etc.

Thanks for the heads up on Calico. I'll have to try out a couple sets of headers to see if I have anything on hand that fits before doing any coating.
