I'm just going to start prefacing all of my posts by apologizing if it's either A) already been asked, or B) a stupid question....haha.

So, the other day I was driving down the road and heard a jingling that sounded as if it were coming from under my car. I checked underneath when I got where I was going, and noticed the cap between the pinion yoke and the carrier was just kinda free floating - not attached to anything. It was obvious that this was the source of the jingling noise. I'll post pictures in a few to illustrate.

My question is how do I reattach it, and what is it supposed to attach to? Is it supposed to attach to the yoke or the carrier? Did I do something wrong when installing the rear end that caused this, and is there something I can do to prevent this from happening in the future?

Thanks all!

If you are referring to the "shield" on the yoke, then you are right- they shouldn't be loose. I have seen these come loose as you describe for reasons unknown. These are pressed onto the yoke. The yoke will need to be removed to be fixed or replaced.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m referring to. I just didn’t quite know the proper term. Well shoot, guess that’s what I’ll be doing then!

Clean it out good with brake cleaner. Remove all oil and residue. Then dry it out good. Force some 2 part epoxy in there and pull the shield forward and let it dry for a day at room temperature before driving. Or put a mild heat source nearby for the drying.

Pictures & a better description might be best, that way we will know what rear axle assembly you are working with. My crystal ball is broken. LOL

If the fit is still good and not all warbled out. A little red Loctite will hold it or a little green Loctite will make it darn near permanent.

Sorry about that! I’m usually pretty good about giving details. I have an 8.75 rear, not sure how to describe it better, other than the shield between the yoke and carrier is loose and not attached to anything. The photo shows the loose part circled, and the arrow shows where some gear oil has been slung as a result.

Looks like a 489 third member. Those are dust covers and are best to pull the yoke and get rid of it rather than worry about it coming loose again. Your is a crush sleeve set up. Before you remove the nut , grab the yoke and see if it has up and down or in and out play. This may be the cause of your leak. Also need to Ck the yoke seal surface to see if it is smooth and not groove. FSM will tell you when you remove the yoke, you need to replace the crush sleeve and set pinion preload.

Is throwing oil so the seal is bad. Epoxy it back in place when the yoke is off. It’s job is to keep gravel and foreign material from damaging the seal. It’s good to have installed on the car.
