A good example of buying a 70 Duster done rather than building one

This 1970 340 4 speed Duster just showed up on Facebook Marketplace from Knoxville, Tennessee listed for $20,000. The car looks pretty nice in the pictures and appears to be fairly original and complete.

You couldn't buy a decent 340 4 speed 70 Duster or create one out of a decent slant 6 car and finish it to the level this car is done for $20,000. The seller is no doubt losing some money on this car at that price. And who knows, maybe this guy would take $19k or $18k.

Planning on buying it and parting it out?

LOL! i don't think so - i'm a Barracuda guy. however, funny you should mention parts cars. the 68 Barracuda i purchased from outside chicago arrives on march 1st and the guy dug up ANOTHER 69 fastback Barracuda parts car that he just sold to me for a "did you steal that" price AND after he drops off the first car, he's going down to West Virginia, loading up the second car and delivering that car to me. i keep running into deals that are too good to pass up, however, i am running out of "parts car" space. all i can say is that i need to start listing parts here on FABO.

Nice looker, until I stare at the pics more. The engine compartment is particularly cringe worthy. Who puts a proportioning valve there???

Ditto on the proportioning valve.
Incorrect air cleaner... etc.
Always makes me wonder what else is lurking...
See UTG on car flipper

you've got to be careful, but sometimes you just luck into a screaming deal...

Damn that firewall is fugly. Its probably a polished pig like you see for sale by them car brokers.

Everyone has "Their" way of doing things, even with a restored car. Sometimes different isn't necessarily wrong. But there are times, it sure the he11 is wrong. I have to question side terminal battery connections with the isolator switch? Buy it and fix what you don't like & make it yours.

Seeing the brake metering block up on the top of the fender well and the black firewall tells me the car was put together by someone who didn't pay attention to the details. There are probably all sorts of things .I'd be careful with this one

Yep, red flags all over the place..I’m sure there are plenty more. Not my 20 large that’s for sure....Swingn’

yep a few things not right with this one, trunk not painted body color, firewall, gas gauge reads almost full with key off???? prop valve ... why would anyone put it up there? battery cables?
like others have said what else is hiding there???

That was my worry....Buying a polished turd. While the year mismatched stuff can be relatively easy to upgrade, I was concerned about what may lurk under a really nice paint job. I know my way around these cars, but I certainly would consider getting it checked out by a pro for before I spent $35000 unless it was a well documented build. But everyone is right.............It certainly is a lot cheaper to get one already done if you have to appeal to the outside world for any aspect of your build.

Looks like a lot of car for the price. Great colors. Keep in mind that the $35k to duplicate it someone mentioned still means all your time is FREE!

Nice post, Jim. Thanks for adding to as usual.

66jim gets my vote for the best post in this thread!

This 1970 Duster 340 has a bunch of issues at least cosmetically and probably some hiding in the mechanical details.
Caveat Emptor ---- pay a real Mopar pro to evaluate the car before spending your hard earned bucks.

Really hard to say what the car is actual worth given the lack of details about overall condition. The longitudinal stripes are not even applied properly as well as the rear panel transverse stripes and the Duster decal - all botched by the installer.

The addition of the hood scoops, hood stripes / blackout and the rear wing are just jewelry and a personal choice.

The nice thing about the 1970 Duster 340 in it's original form was that it was a pretty much a bare bones presentation exterior wise although the rear wing spoiler was an rare option. The 1971 Duster 340 went in the opposite direction with it's exterior adornments. Some prefer the 1970 for the clean minimalist presentation.

Everyone has their way of doing cars with their own personal touch. Some are just good enough while others are not. Take a good look at ur own car b4 u ***** slap someone else’s. It may be a great car for someone just wanting a nice driver. Not every car has to be factory correct. Some ppl don’t give a dam if its factory or not. This owner is not asking for factory correct dollars either. Jim is right, it seems to be a good car for the money. Kim
