The 4.7 version will bolt up to a 87-3.9 however there are some differences. The flywheel cover has a different bolt pattern, and if its 4wd, the (plates?) that tie the engine block, differential, and transmission together have to be modified for the different bolt pattern on the bottom of the bell housing.
