360-383 A-debate...max builds need not apply.

Having built both 340 and 383 A-bodies (pretty much stock) and reading old road tests, there is really very little difference in performance between the two in similar cars. I've only owned two 360s, one in a '79 3/4ton club cab, long bed Power Wagon. It could pull a stump (did that once), but it was NOT quick for obvious reasons. The other is the Magnum in my 2000 Durango (4,500 lbs.). The 5.9 Magnum FEELS a lot like the 340 in power even if it is pulling an extra 1,000 lbs.

There is a reason for going big block, but with a 383 it becomes just preference. Now, a 440 is a completely different story...
