Looking for some expert input for the 71 Demon 340 hood scoop trim. My dual scoops have the chrome trim on the front of the scoops. Does anyone know if the underside of them was painted a flat silver color (maybe to prevent reflection?) or were they just left chrome? Mine seem to have had some overspray on them so not quite sure. I polished them up but may paint the underside. You can see the underside of one of them below. Obviously the leading edge will stay chrome but wondering about the underside. I know the black is correct but not sure about the chrome underneath. Also posting a pic of the hood prior to repainting for reference. Thx!!

My bone stock '70 Swinger 340 scoops are painted body color ( B5 blue in my case) On the bottom. If your car has the factory blackout hood treatment, I don't know what's correct. If there are any doubters I'll go take some photos tomorrow. Paul.

I'll check the leading edge chrome trim pieces, too. IIRC, they have a satin black stripe about 3/4' wide on the bottom. These are stock, unmolested parts. Paul.

Great - I'll look forward to seeing what you find. (Yes, my hood has the blackout treatment)

The underside of the scoops are body color, EB5 blue in my case. The front of the bezels were painted chassis black, with EB5 blue overspray from the factory when they sprayed the hood. The front of the retaining screws are also chassis black. There are remnants of rubber/neoprene washers between the hood and the mounting studs. I'll figure out how to post the photos from my phone, including Ma Mopars P/N's. Paul.

The answer for black out hoods is both - the area where yours is black should be and the area from the ridge just inside the bezel to the back is a flat silver color.

Thx...that is what I thought but wanted to confirm. Seems like they would have been black but mine were a flat silver color so that's what they'll be again. Appreciate everybody sharing info here. It's what I like best on FABO!!

I'm not a computer guru, but I'll try to send these as is. The scoops are from an original 70 Swinger 340, EB5 blue, no blackout hood treatment. This is the left/driver's side scoop. I can provide more pictures if needed to any interested member. Left/driver's side parts are odd numbered, right/starboard side are even. Again, I'm not a computer scientist, so please keep your criticism positive.

I'll try again. Various pics of original scoops from my 70 Swinger 340. EB5 blue, no blackout hood treatment. I showed a couple of the original nut plates that hold the chrome molding to the scoop, and a couple of the nut plates that hold the scoop to the hood, with the deteriorated rubber isolators. More photos available to anyone interested. Paul.

That's awesome Paul! Your pics should help a lot of folks. Yours are from a 70 Swinger 340, non-blackout hood, and mine is a 71 Demon 340 with the blackout hood. I was trying to determine the original treatment of the underside of the chrome scoop bezels. Given your pics, and given what mine looked like, here is what I see:

Your pics shows the remnants of what would have been black for the location where the attaching screws go and that also face forward. Makes sense - mine have that too. What is interesting is in your picture I snipped below and annotated, the underside area of your bezels appear to be polished where I sketched the word "color." In this area on mine, they appear to have been a flat silver/argent color just as member @str12-340 states above. (I polished mine up just cleaning them as they were quite dirty and had overspray from a prior repaint on them.) Yours look to have the remains of blue paint - at least over near the black attaching area. Not sure what that is about or why but clearly that was body color for some reason. The rest of yours appear to be polished also. I suspect like many things on these cars, there were intentional differences and I'm just not smart enough to know all of them!

I'm going to paint the "color" area on mine a flat silver color to match what I found out on here and like they appeared to be. I had considered leaving them polished but as bright as they are, I don't want there to be some type of reflection on the black hood of either light or engine parts given the proximity to the holes in the hood under the scoops!

Thx for taking the time to post those pics for all to see.

You are doing correct thing...I have 5 pairs all have argent!!

Since mine appear to have been polished at some point, I'll add the argent to mine, too. Thanks to all.

Anybody have a tip for getting paint to stick to these polished surfaces? I figure it won't adhere very well. Maybe rough them up with some fine sandpaper or ??

I noticed in the Classic Industries catalogue, they're described as painted argent silver and black on the underside of the lip, so so the PO must have polished them off I my car. I'm going to try cleaning them with acetone, and using a self etching grey primer before I hit them with the light argent. Anyone know of a good source of '70 light argent paint" I'll need it for my grill and bezels too.

I tried multiple types of primer - self-etching included - and the results were the same: the silver paint peels right off. The undersides of mine will just stay polished except where the black is by the screw holes. That wasn't really polished and seems to hold paint. If you have better luck with paint sticking, please post!

I like 'em fully polished underneath the lip, and I'll paint them semi flat black on the forward facing surface. If the Pebble Beach guys criticize me, so be it. I'll post pictures if anyone cares. Looking at the price of the repops, I'm comfortable with my garage resto. Thanks to all. Paul.

That's where I'm at too on polish and paint. But I don't have any Pebble Beach crowd looking at my junk anyway. These old cars are for me to enjoy!!

Not to hijack, but can someone clarify the chrome bezels when the car is optioned with the hood blackout. I believe I have read when the hood black out is optioned, the scoops were black. Here is a picture of my 1971 Demon when Dad brought it home new.

Also the hood blackout should come short of the leading edge of the hood as well as a body color stripe down the center.

regarding bezel color and year - 1970 Dart black out hood option runs from center of hood ridge to center of hood ridge (side to side) and from all the way over the hood lip to the windshield molding - V21 option. All came with chrome bezels and 340 chrome call outs on the side of the scoops. 1971 Demon had the two part black out with body color in the middle and came with black bezels (as pictured above) and no call outs on the scoops (on front fender?).

Somebody else will have to speak up about the Plymouths which used the same scoops. I don't think they ever had call outs on the scoop. You could get them with a 318, where at Dodge they were only available on 340 cars.
