Hello everybody, my good ole 727 is starting to slip pretty bad. Its time for a rebuild i'm wondering if anyone knows of a good rebuild kit. ill be running a 3500 stall with a cheetah full Manuel valve body. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I buy the kits from Summit. Two choice levels in the Summit brand, plus other brand name kits.

I keep reading these threads where they buy super duper rebuild kits and then find out there are all sorts of parts they still need; just to do a stock rebuild. When they finally locate all the extra parts, and get the trans together, they realize that it's pretty much a stock trans with a few high performance parts; after all; and not even a very good one.

Why not just take it to a reputable shop and it built with a warranty? I see a lot of folks try and save a few bucks and they end up spending the same more money in the long run. My experience is, there is not one kit that you can buy that has everything you need.

that's an option, I called one shop and they want $1500. I'm waiting to hear back from another.

Engine? What kind of HP are you running? Street, track or strip?

DoopDoop, My Alto connection directs me to these guys when I need to buy Alto kits.

@doopdoop67 Pay attention.
The man that wrote the book on 727s just hooked you up with a link to where he gets his parts.
Now you need to get his book.

This popular unit has proven to be a very reliable workhorse for heavy-duty
and racing applications. The addition of extra capacity clutches allows energy to be
distributed over more surface area, reducing heat significantly and reducing friction plate
stress, while improving shift quality.

These performance benefits will ensure a longer lasting unit.

This powerpack has compatibility of more than 1000 vehicles if you are unsure it fits yours just ask us.

Transmission 46RH/46RE/47RH/47RE/48RE (A518 / A618)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

The stack-up of the front clutch is the same as OE with the exception of adding additional plates.

Use the
combination of .068” steel plates and .085” steel plates to achieve the correct clutch pack clearance.

You will be
capable of stacking 5/6 frictions and 5/6 steels in the A518, and 6/7 friction and 6/7 steels in the A618, and 5/6
frictions or 6/7 steels into the TF8/727 depending on drum.

If you use the pressure plate supplied in this kit, you
can change to the higher numbers of plates, if you use the OE pressure plate you can install the lower number of
plates.

After assembly of drum, apply the clutch pack several times with air to seat all components (Fig. 98).

Check clutch
pack clearance using a feeler gauge. Insert feeler gauge between wave snap ring and pressure plate.

Clearance
should be .070” to .129” (1.78mm to 3.28mm).

If clearance is incorrect, clutch plates, snap ring, or pressure plate
may have to be changed. (Fig 99).

Most kits use the same parts, just in a different bag/box. There are only a couple of companies that make steel plates, and a couple that make gasket sets. Friction plates maybe 3-5. I've seen guys that have spent a lot of money on some big name brand kit, only to find out what they mostly paid for was the brand name on the box. Nothing really special inside other than the friction plates and maybe the bands.

I used Performance Automatics kit. Alto red race discs and kolene steel discs. All seals and gaskets with Fairbanks shift kit. Seemed like a nice package to me. Just my .02.

Good grief some here need to learn to Read! Oregon Performance Transmission - High Performance Tranmission Parts - Free Shipping They have upgrades and any additional components. You can get all you need from them, like I mentioned above “tailor this kit to your needs” , same brands as any other vendor. I use them exclusively as I’ve had nothing but great service and pricing. Again, they have everything you need. Highly Recommended.

Maybe the trick is to "read between the lines"...That's just another website with loads of parts..plenty of them out there..Show me a rebuild kit with five red thins for the direct clutch and maybe I'll go along. I see overkill direct clutch packs with 6-7 red thins but no logical kits without spending about a hundred bucks on a direct pack capable of about 1200 horse.

So what kit are you recommending?

Maybe this can be a revealing and educational topic discussion if you explain to all possibly reading this thread the benefits of running 5 minimum or even more frictions? What applications require 5? Or more than 5 frictions? What power levels are we talking? And what exactly is the issue with the factory 4 disc setup that’s been the standard and performed perfectly fine for decades? You’re asserting that the standard number is not recommended, why? I’d wager many that have posted or are watching are not really sure what you are driving at. There are known ways to stuff more in there by swapping, changing out etc before any machining. May I suggest you explain further? As it stands now you are likely talking over the heads of most and it would do you and others good to explain. And give examples, recommendations (which you haven’t so far) not just critique and pass judgement (and, I’m sorry, come off with a seemingly arrogant combative tone at times) on anything others offer up. Many could benefit from good insight. :)

Kits.....Always a good thing to see what others have to say about certain aspects of rebuilds, and do as much research as you can stand. Along with the various books that won’t steer you wrong, over on FBBO they also have a drivetrain Forum with good discussions and insightful posts by some also very knowledgeable helpful people: 727 Overhaul Kit and I especially like this:

Sending one of these 727s or 904s out to be rebuilt for a warranty is the most terrible advice I've ever heard... If you can fall out of bed you can rebuild one of these... The reason the kits don't have five clutches is because they're trying to compete with the other 300 internet sellers for the cheapest price. They'll sell you another steal and another clutch if you need one separately but in order to keep their kits 10 cents cheaper than the next guy which is generally the deciding factor for a lot of people but don't put it in there.... Kits are about in the $125 range and a trans go two shift kit is in the $75 range.. a jar of Vaseline is in the $3 range LOL... A good pair of snap ring pliers is probably in the $20 range and a plastic toothpick should be pretty cheap for getting the lip seals in...
A thread just recently where a guy had the reverse band drop out of his transmission and the transmission shop wouldn't warranty it because he changed the oil pan to a larger one which LOL would help the transmission shop because he could carry more clean fluid LOL...
When you rebuild it yourself you know it's done right... Or not.. LOL...
When I was getting the advice of a member who managed automatic transmission shops he said if one of his employees couldn't build two of these in a day he'd be looking for a different job pretty soon... He might have said three I can't remember but the point is it's not even that time consuming more like rebuilding a carburetor... Of course since we're doing it at home we'll take our time and make sure everything's right especially the first time...
