Another reason not to like new cars.

-
New cars are like new riding mowers, so called lawn "tractor" safety switches every friggin where!! WTF!????
Give me a BARE auto, old or new, wait they don't make new bare cars!!!
Manual steering, brakes, NO radio, NO AC....roll down the windows and drive 90... be a real man (or woman)!

Our newest is Kitty's 04 Escape and I gotta say it's been the best car we've ever had.....besides old ones.

Mother in law got 21 ram. It has the stupid knob shifter. I have tried turning the heat and radio down to put it in park. Yesterday I went to jump a 90 toyota 4wd pickup and the damn thing went into park and put the electric e brake on cause the door was open. Don’t even get me started on the backup camera. Do people still use mirrors to back up?
Our newest is the family hauler...a 2015 CX-9
it has a back up camera, but whoever designed it is an idiot

somehow they managed to not put the camera dead center in the trunk lid so when you use the camera to back up to a trailer, and put the trailer dead center of the screen...you are about 18 inches off center of the CAR

seriously, idiots

the next newest vehicle we have is out 08 charger AKA the winterbeater
that car was probably the best vehicular investment ever

the only thing i ever replaced that wasnt oil or tires is a set of CV boots
and the dashlights went out

Reminds me of the commercial, "Why don't we just get in the running car and get out of here?" :) Why would he get in that thing?

Yup, I hate them new cars too. Always trying to kill you...
There's nothing in this thread about safety. Newer cars defininetly are. The thread is about the features and gadgets that don't allow you to drive your own car.

My caravans tire icon lit up. 40 psi in everything so I raise it to 44 psi per the tires. now the tire icon is flashing....? the stock tires said 38 so I guess the 'puter wants to see 38? The CEL went on too and the code said cam position sensor B or something...no performance issues. Started it up the next morning CEL is out. ITs been pretty good though (2014 w/160K) cept both front door window regulators have failed. $40 on Amazon and about an hours worth of work, but the first one took me 2, flying blind. In laws 2016 CRV has 1 lock cylinder, on the driver door as the key fob unlocks it 99% of the time. well the fob died so she tried the key and there is something in there blocking the key from going in...vandals? Anyway, Honda wants $180 for a new cylinder. Pshhhh.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I like a lot of that stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love the old ones but our 18 Jeep is a lot safer, more convenient and still fun to drive. It's never run down the battery and has been very reliable. It's also very comfortable. I had back issues but within 2 weeks of getting the Jeep the pain was going away. Completely gone now. But when I want to decompress or drive something primitive I have the 340 4-speed Duster.

Do people still use mirrors to back up?
Nope, only to check the make-up or see if there's ketchup on their face. Pisses me off when I see people watching the damn screen while backing up. Had 2 vehicles with the camera, one was an aftermarket piece of crap that I yanked out, the other was in my 2013 Mustang GT, I rarely ever used it, much rather look for myself.

Wife's car is 2002 Taurus, has the automatic locks which she likes, I can take or leave them, but at least they are easily disabled, no other gadgets that I'm aware of, I like the "basics" of my 1990 Bronco, it was the top of the line in it's day, a/c, tilt steering, cruise control, power windows, intermittent wipers, am/fm cassette, push button 4x4, and cloth seats! Today that would be a stripped down entry level model, lol. Then there's the real basic transportation of my 75 Dart, am radio and auto trans are about it's only options.

The backup camera on my 19 ram is great for hooking up trailers. The auto door locks suck, knob shifter sucks, annoying dinging if you leave the key in or don’t put on your seatbelt. Ordered it with a “limited slip” axle and all we got was the stupid traction control crap.

Plastic heater cams that strip teeth and suddenly no heat on driver's side. Not even defrost. Dealer says dash has to come out.

Automatic door locks that cannot be disabled, and and power windows that cannot be locked off; these require me to be 100% sure that when I get out of the vehicle, that the key goes with me. I live in a rural setting, and this is a constant PITA for me, especially as I get older ..............

Remote keyfobs that require the doors to be locked, before the car will start. It's just one more thing I am forced to remember, and forced to undo; Someone else has decided for me, what I HAVE to do; instead of it being a feature, it is a power-trip for the programmer, and a constant source of aggravation to me.
My car has so many different sounds that it makes, and so many icons that light up on the dash, and so many things the computer is doing besides fueling and timing;
that there is no way for me to keep up with them all, so I just drive the stinking thing. I suppose it will tell me, when it is about to blow up

But the one thing, the really useful thing, that it could be doing, but does not, that I would really appreciate; is to tell me when it has burned a quart of oil away, and needs to be topped up. I still gotta open the hood and pull the dipstick, just as as I did on my ancient technology first car, a 57 Belair.
Seventy years later, and my 2014 Orlando, still has to be dipped, ain't technology grand.
I just found out yesterday, having had the car for 2.5 years that the car knows when it's on ice and has ever so slight wheel spin, jiminy! But no oil-level sensor; what a POS.
And apparently, it has lousy rings, that even tho the compression is 220 psi, the blowby overwhelms the PCV system, which requires a constant top-up.
But even worse us that there is no EXTERNAL PCV system. And even worse is that somehow, the blowby gasses that escape the engine, find their way into the cabin when the car is stopped.....
But hey, I guess when I stop smelling them, I'll know it's time to add oil.....

How about a circuit that turns off your windshield wipers the night before they freeze to your windshield or get 6 inches of snow.

or can stop wiping, by themselves, when the window is dry enough to make those horrible skipping noises. but resume a few hundred yards later, when you pass under the next wattery cloud.....

Just off the top of my head, in no particular order:
- The godawful electronic rear view mirrors that do next to nothing to dim the bright headlights of the vehicle behind you. The old ones with the tab you flipped over at night were so simple and worked perfectly, but I guess the marketing geniuses figured people can't be bothered to do that anymore.
- The auto stop/start controls to shut the engine off when you come to a light
- Traction control that kills the throttle at the slightest bit of wheel slip. And I'm not talking about "stability control" that will cut power if you start getting sideways, that is reasonable to me. I've driven too many vehicles where the traction control is way over zealous.
- Trim level/option package arrangements that prevent you from getting anything but the base engine unless you move way up in price point by having to get all sorts of crap you don't want

Yep.
"Standard procedure in this type of crash"
They said this morning.

F tiger woods who cares about the overpaid idiot, and don't get me started on creature features in cars when the size of the display screen is the number one option well the pure driving experience is dead! And what about the price people buy those things up for 30-40,000 like they're going out of style all riding each other's asses andhurrying to their next social media dilemma.

30 to 40000 will get you a used 5 year old truck up here...

I have a new company car with the eco boost thing. It shuts the motor down at stop lights, hate it! My whole life that was the sign to get out and push........

Cars are being engineered into the disposable category. A lot of these new systems, auto braking , correcting etc. call for for aiming and recalibrations of the sensors for which some manufactures have kept the procedures, methods, and equipment to do the job proprietary. These calibrations are running the shop $500-700 just to calibrate the system(no parts/sensors) and in most situations these sensors are located just inside the plastic bumper covers so they are easily damaged or knocked out of alignment. There is huge liability involved and something that absolutely needs to be done because you don't want the sensors inadvertently picking up a bridge overpass or oncoming traffic in the other lane and slamming the brakes on.

Combine that with all the additional parts, cooling system components, etc involved in hydrid and you have a throwaway.

These additional costs can quickly push one into totaled category.

I think we have been warned this was coming.
Do all new vehicles have a "black box"?
IDK.
But I suspect they do.
And they are watch us.
Let's not black out and miss the point.:)

Too much content in new cars. The ones that shut off at stop lights have a second pump in the transmission to keep the fluid circulating so there isn’t a lag when the light turns green and you mash the loud pedal!

I work in the plastics industry and we sell “low odor” plastics for the interiors now because people no longer like the “new car smell”.
I have a 2019 Malibu as a company car. It’s nice and drives well. But if you need air in the tires, it will honk the horn at you when you get enough pressure in there! Who needs a pressure gauge anymore??

Every car guy hates new cars ... but I literally never see any old cars on the street around here other than on cruise nights... I might see a square body Chevy truck once in a while...

I'd say the newest car you could get that is still easy to work on with no sensors or safety is probably the 1992 GMC Sonoma. I think it is the last year with no airbags, rear seat belts, and none of that fuel injection crap. (it does have a tbi, but it is possible to loop the wires going to it and slap a carb and a distributor on the thing.)
