Wish I could see that EM test. I had that app for a while but it sucked using it and I didn’t see that episode.
Yup i'm just about to go look for it and see if i can find it but. if these numbers are correct. then HP is the LAST thing you should consider when i come to a cam system!!!!!!!!!

timing chain 633.5 hp. miliodon 636.3 hp, dual idler 634, jessel 633 hp.

average hp, chain 596.4, fixed gear 596.3, dual idler 596.3, jessel 594.2.


I can see how the belt drive "could" pick up hp at the track because its a lighter set up.

Gear Drive for the longevity (could ware out many motors and still have a good Gear Drive)

What the test cannot show is the accuracy of your cam timing and your valve to piston clearance. IMHO a single idler is best at that.
 
I used a PeteJackson gear drive and the timing was steady, no noise. The TCI rattler I had on that motor made me more nervous than the PJ did. Maybe it cost some power.
 
I’d love to see the back to back dyno tests where a belt drive was 14 HP better than a fixed idler gear drive.

No test , but a lot of chevy racers are using the belt drives , no valve train harmonics transfered at all . A friend thats an 18 time national record holder in the past used one . A lot of racers were using them --------------

WHAT I`VE READ , THE GEAR DRIVE TRANSFERS A LOT OF HARMONICS TO THE VALVE TRAIN , WHY DOESNT THE FACTORY USE THEM ??
He also says it’s an “old wives’ tale” that a properly set up gear drive will transfer undesirable harmonics into the valvetrain.
Wah Wah Wahhhh...busted! Coming from the maufacturer. Its hard to transfer harmonics across a big crack, ie .003 lash. Snow skis use a 'cracked edge' to reduce vibrations sent the the ski itself. to Why dont manufactures use them? Because they are noisy!!! and they are not cheap...

BTW..."..Volume 2 engine masters did a cam drive comparison on a 440 mopar. milidon fixed idler, cat copy of the pete jackson dual idler, comp cams adjustable timing chain set, jesel belt drive.

Yeah , but they didnt run it till something in the valve train broke ----------
 
For 95% of us a GOOD Quality timing chain is as good as either of the high end solutions.

If your rebuilding your race car eng a lot. the gear drive would me money ahead in the long run.

If 1,2 or 3 HP is a big deal to you, then a belt drive will work better.

If i lived in one of these categories and i do, that is how i would choose my set up............Yeah i'm the 95% guy.

It’s only good if you love to run extra piston to valve clearance, or you love watching the timing move all over hell.

In 30 years my gear drive will still be as accurate then as it was when it came out of the box. No timing chain will ever last like that. Ever. No belt system either. It’s not always about horsepower. It’s also about durability, accuracy and value.

A timing chain is like stepping over donuts to pick up a dog turd and then saying you got a sweet deal.

As for valve train issues I’ve never seen them ever. And I don’t use gear drives just on my stuff. Plans are in the works for a SBC this fall to be upgraded and updated and it’s getting a gear drive. Because accuracy, durability and value matter.

99% of ALL valve train issues are either geometry or spring load or both issues.
 
Here is an article about a new engine design, which is really a warmed up BBC.

Two things caught my eye.

One, they are trying to build an off the shelf engine package that will be reliable at 9,000 RPM and two, the fact that both Dart AND ProLine chose a gear drive.

Neither company has stupid people. Neither company cuts corners. And yet, these two companies decided the gear drive was the BEST way to drive the camshaft in a 9,000 RPM engine.

What’s equally eye catching is the cam in that block is raised .100 so a chain would be all that much longer. The longer the chain, the more issues you have. Same with the belt. That’s why a QUALITY, FIXED IDLER gear drive is a cheap investment. And worth every penny.


Evidently, Dart and ProLine didn’t get the memo that gear drives create parts breaking, valve train destroying harmonics and take too much power to drive.

Or they are just idiots.

Or maybe, just maybe they did the research and when you need accurate valve timing you use a quality gear drive.
