Another reason not to like new cars.

Cars are being engineered into the disposable category. A lot of these new systems, auto braking , correcting etc. call for for aiming and recalibrations of the sensors for which some manufactures have kept the procedures, methods, and equipment to do the job proprietary. These calibrations are running the shop $500-700 just to calibrate the system(no parts/sensors) and in most situations these sensors are located just inside the plastic bumper covers so they are easily damaged or knocked out of alignment. There is huge liability involved and something that absolutely needs to be done because you don't want the sensors inadvertently picking up a bridge overpass or oncoming traffic in the other lane and slamming the brakes on.

Combine that with all the additional parts, cooling system components, etc involved in hydrid and you have a throwaway.

These additional costs can quickly push one into totaled category.
