Recommendations for trans fluid??

904 trans , manual reverse valve body, extra 2 quarts deep pan , 3500 converter, huge cooler.
Reasonably priced!!
 
I would use a Dexron based fluid, like the spec calls for. Plenty of people use Ford type F. The simple truth of the matter is the Torqueflite will run off most anything, including motor oil. I like to keep it simple and run a form of Dexron. I'd run probably Dexron III if I could find it.

I just got my 904 reverse manual from Cope Racing Transmissions, John's recommendation was Penzoil DEX-MERC or B&M Trick Shift.
 
I needed to fill my torque converter before I mated the trans to the engine and used a quart of import fluid I had laying around...

Two completely different fluids and either will work fine! lol That just shows you how little the Torqueflite cares. lol

B&M Trick Shift is Ford Type F. Says so right on the label. LOL
 
RRR is correct, B & M trick shift is type F fluid. It is just more expensive than the type F you can buy off the shelf.
 
what ever the latest dextron is that is compatible with the old dextron III.. no need for that type F any more.

Well I am just gonna use what John recommended, especially since it is a pretty expensive component.. and for some reason directions seems to mean a lot more to me these days..LOL

FWIW I have used type F since the 70's it was the poor mans shift kit...

It works good. There's nothing wrong with it.

There was an article on Allpar that talked about a Sheriff's department somewhere in California in the early 60s that was shoppin around for a new fleet of squad cars. One of their requirements was that the engine and transmission take the same lubricant. Chrysler was the only one that was possible with and they bought an entire fleet and used 10/30 in the engines and transmissions. It worked fine. lol

For the small difference in performance, I wouldn't do it. I would stick with whatever you originally filled with. JMO.

Of course you can. I've heard some transmission shops recommend mixing Type F and Dex. These things would run on canola oil.
 
If I'm not mistaken, Dex/Merc meets the Dexron III requirements if you cannot find straight Dexron III.

If I remember correctly (it’s been awhile since I read it) the Torqueflite Transmission Handbook by Carl Munroe recommends NOT running Type F fluid.

I can double check that when I get home.

O’Reilly, Advance or Autozonk store brand Dex/Merc. Stuff is red, smells like, and has that feel of tranny fluid! Works just like it should. I’d spend my time wondering about ensuring no pan gasket, shift shaft seal or front pump bushing leaks. Well, I do at least! :thumbsup:

TCI's brand (easy to identify, it's clear not red). Recommended by my tranny builder many years ago.
 
So I finally found the reference to not using Type F transmission fluid. It wasn’t in the Torqueflite Transmission Handbook after all but it was in the Chrysler Performance Upgrades Book by Frank Adkins.
