im planning the wiring for my ‘65 Valiant and was wondering where the battery negative normally connects. The battery is in the stock location. Pics would be great! Thanks!

Should bolt directly to the block as shown in this picture I pulled off the interweb

^^Yes- if it's a V8, it's bolted to the front of the driver's side head. There is a ground cable from the rear of the passenger side head to the firewall, and *sometimes* another ground strap on the driver's side from the rear engine mount ear to the K frame.

On 1970 and newer mopars they had a smaller wire coming off the negative battery terminal to the core support to ground the body. Then no wire from back of engine to the firewall.

On my '64 I have battery to block, block to firewall. I used the additional neg. wire from the battery clamp to the core suport to ensure better ground for the lights. Belt & suspenders!

Ok, is the engine then grounded to the chassis?

There is a ground wire or braided strap that runs to the firewall usually off an intake bolt or bolted to the back of the head. On my slant six, there is a ground wire from a bellhousing bolt to the firewall. I also added a #4 ground where the battery negative bolts to the block and ran it to an inner fender bolt at the driver's corner of the radiator support just in front of the battery. You need grounds from the engine to the "CAR" like that since the engine is mounted on rubber. I've seen an entire steering column's worth of harness BURNT SLAP UP because the entire electrical system was trying to ground through the column shift linkage. It will ground "WHEREVER" it can so make sure you do it RIGHT or you might regret it.

On my Slant with A/C, the ground is connected to the A/C housing. Now you guys have me wondering if that is correct?

Most of the 273s left the factory with the ground cable attached to the left front intake manifold bolt. As cables were replaced most folks moved the cable to the bolt hole on the front of the cylinder head.

This is good info. I ran my negative battery cable to a bolt hole on the intake, plus a ground strap from back of head to the firewall. I had no reference as my car was a basket case. maybe I will correct it.:) As long as everything is grounded to avoid the electrical demons...:0

Seems to me some had a ground wire to the rad or core support, but omit it if your rad is aluminum and
don't put a ground wire on an aluminum intake either!

I don't think it matters electrically. Mine was grounded where the power steering pump would be. I have manual steering. I think it all depends on what accessories the car had. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it is grounded good and has all other grounding wires and straps we've talked about here.

Thanks all! I’m going for a clean engine bay look so I think I’m going to put my cable on a bolt hole to the rear of the driver’s cylinder head and use the same bolt to put a cable going to the firewall.

personally i'm ground crazy.I ground the engine, firewall, core support and an external ground even on my electronic ignition module frame
