I am having my original power steering box rebuilt and upgraded for more feel. My federal pump was not leaking and was operating smoothly, so I really don't want to take it apart, but it was suggested that I flush it out to ensure there are no contaminants that could get into the fresh box. What kind of solvent would work without affecting the seals?

I'm no expert but I think you can remove low pressure return hose from Pump and feed it into a jug or bucket. Put a rubber nipple over the return tube (low pressure hose) on reservoir. Have someone start the car and as the reservoir gets pumped down add new fluid until old fluid is flushed out. I use tranny fluid in my pump so flushing would be less expensive. I wouldn't use a cleaner ,just new fluid to flush. JMO

I wouldn't use anything but fresh new PS fluid.

Even after flushing, I run an in-line filter in the return hose that is specifically designed filter for transmission fluid, has a magnet in it and costs about $25. I leave it in.

Thanks, I should have mentioned that the pump is off the car during my engine reassembly. I guess I could just pour fresh fluid into the return line and spin the pump by hand until the pressure hose runs clear?

Spin it with a power tool (air ratchet) that fits the fastener that holds the pulley on. Just make sure you go in the correct direction.

It's $265. to rebuild that Federal pump at Steer&Gear. Flush like the other posts said.
