Hi Folks

I am planning on sending my hood in to get the underside media blasted. I am scared to death that it may twist if the guy on the gun is overzealous. Has anyone had any experience with this. I am thinking of having it done with recycled walnut shells or glass. What do you think? I don't want to wreck this hood.......1971 Demon.

Thanks

The guys needs to know what he is doing then it’s fine. If he doesn’t then it will have raised up triangle shapes on the top skin.

you can fill in the triangles and not blast the top skin and only blast the under bracing.

Don't do it. I just went through this and the guy swore he knew what he was doing. Said he's been doing it for years! These hoods are near impossible to find in half decent condition, at least on the east coast. Spend the time to do it by hand. It sucks but you will regret it if they screw it up, and they most likely will. I did!

If you do blast it you will need to replace the dum-dum between the reinforcement and the skin.

why not have it dipped?

Blasting does not remove caulking if you are somewhat careful. Do not use sand as that creates more heat and leaves a poor surface for paint. Other media creates less heat.

Walnut is pretty mild, how about soda? Glass is pretty harsh but looks great on manifolds.

You must use a media that creates the least amount of heat possible and he needs to stay back off it. Also turn the pressure down on the blaster. Walnut shell would be my choice.

I recently got a modest home soda set up (HF), very gently removes paint, good for pistons, but doesn't do much about rust.

are these guys near you? Dustless blasting will probably work for you

Holding the gun at a 45* angle or a little less, helps keep heat down.

pro media blaster here. i have done a bunch of 70-72 dart/demon hoods. they are actually pretty easy to blast. i wet blast but will not ever wet blast sheet metal. lots of the info out there on wet blasting is false and hyped up by the manufacturer (especially MMLJ) to sell their units. do not wet blast as the wet media will get stuck between the two skins and its just a **** process that people have believed to be a good process because of hype. soda and walnut wont take rust off.
#1 thing that people do not really know about abrasive blasting. there is more than one size of grit. yep, one size does not fit all. most warpage is from unskilled blasters and/or huge coarse media.
most blasters reuse media so your project is getting somebody else's rust paint bondo dirt and undercoating. i never reuse, new media only. I do use soda and walnut but in the last 8 or so years i have almost totally moved away and just gone to recycled glass. 100-200grit. its very fine. leaves a great profile and does not hammer and heat the metal like coarser medias do. good blast angles, good media, the right air pressure and your blaster should have no problems. have them show you what they can do and what medias they use, ask for references (bodyshops) that they blast for and ask to see examples. the biggest thing i learned blasting is when to say no. blasters are normally unskilled, low paid employees who really dont care if they damage your stuff as they aren't paying to replace it.

you have Manus abrasives in Ontario. i would contact them and ask who is a good blaster in your area. they should be able to put you on to a good company. ask them who buys 100-200 grit.

another option is just blast the lower skin and not around the holes, just fingerbang those by hand or with a orby as long as the rust isnt too bad (no rust in ontario)

i have my 71 demon hood that i am going to blast in the next few days for myself. maybe ill post pics of before and after.
