408 SB versus BB 541

I looked at building just a standard 426 Hemi. It woulda cleaned me out financially. I just couldn’t afford it. Would sure love one though!

It's a 408 Six Pack. Nuff said. :)

The 541 surely has aluminum heads and intake, right? There's your weight difference right there. Was this a trick question?

Was taking a break from working on my Dart which is almost finished. Found a 440/541 stroker kit .Kept looking at parts, heads, oil systems, cams, carbs, headers which i will probably have custom made etc. etc. I know that the entire drivetrain and suspension will have to be maxed but I was going to do it anyway. I could be wrong but it looks like the 408 is the same money as the 541 . A “friend “ who has a 200 mph ten second Porsche has been making negative comments about my Dart. I would love to smoke his ***(only in the quarter, there’s no way I’m going that fast.
Your impressions??

I wouldn't build anything larger than a 505/512 for a street car since you want to keep the oil pickup inside the pan. A 440 based 505 or a 400 based 512 will fit okay in an A body car but it does require rounding up the correct parts and then some talent/skill to put it together. A 408 or larger SB might be a little easier task. I built a 427 inch SB a few years back for a Valiant. That was a very cool combination, the car flew. I have a 512 inch B block in my Duster and even with a mild hyd roller cam and 1 3/4 inch headers it pulls hard.

You can build a 470 or 500 ci with a 400 block. 550 -700 or so HP. easy 10 sec 1/4.
the low deck will provide better header fit in an A-body. plus it will be a tad lighter engine.
and if you gear it right and get the suspension up to snuff it could go 200 mph.
It's easy to build a death ride, I would get the chassis up to snuff before putting the HP to it.
Don't get me wrong cubes are king. But I built a 30 over 440 that ran 10.40 at 126 in the 1/4 on 93 pump gas. The car was a 3400 pound with me in it 73 dart swinger. Also that was with little tuning and the wrong sized torque converter

Just keep calling his 911 a v6 bug, see how he likes it.

The 911 has low weight and good traction in its corner. They can launch decent and still gain big on the top half of the track as a result. If you try to match him with HP alone, it's going to be tough as you'll be blowing the tires off at the line and at the edge of spinning them the rest of the track... And that's after stuffing as much rubber under there as you can.

Plenty of folks are in the 9-10s range with 360-400 cubes, whether bb or sb - what all quick cars have in common is good suspension and traction. I'd focus on that and weight, which will probably yield more effect on ET per dollar spent than spending on HP alone would.

Just my $.02, worth the price paid..

If you REALLY want the "wow" factor, just build a 572 blown Hemi. There's something about those belt-driven intakes that get peoples juices going.
That's all cool & everything but do you really wanna spend the week cleaning people's juices off your car, yucky.
