Picked up 4 old lawnmowers the other day, plus the 2 junkers I have. My intention LOLOL is to get one going for "crap" mowing in the weeds, and maybe another "the best" engine might try and build an outboard conversion with an old lower unit. "We'll see"

So these all have the same series types of numbers, and I can find various things on the internet EXCEPT the specs as to CID (or CC) and HP

Example
10T502-0457-E1

Found the operator manual and parts manual at B&S but no HP rating

The newer engines (probably those produced in the last 20 years) don't have horsepower ratings just engine size in cc's. If they do have ratings they are torque and not HP.

Thanks but been there All these engines have similar numbers stamped on the shroud such as the example I started earlier, or EG

10T502-0498 E1 06112051 and none of that fits the "series" strings on that page. Seems to me it would be basic info---you llook up the engine no's and SOMEwhere should be CID (or CC) or HP.

As it sits, I don't know whether any of these are "close to" 3, or 4, or 6hp Briggs USED to have HP, all three of my older Coleman/ Powermate generators have a decal right on the front.

I don't care what the specs are as long as I can find SOMETHING. As it is I don't know anything about em, and the www hasn't been helpful LOL

I've got the engine numbers, just no way to "get there from here." Thanks for the trouble. I did download the parts/ owner manual for a couple

Main thing I don't want to do is waste a bunch of time (and money) on some 3hp toy instead of something with more "pop"

Any label on top with a series, such as 500 or 600 series, or any name such as Quantum, etc.?

I remember the lawn mower HP wars around the turn of the century.

3.5
3.75
4

then

6
7
8

...and then somewhere they snuck in the substitution TQ rating.

Some even just put arbitrary numbers on them.

Giant font "8", then a tiny "th generation" or "series" next to it.
Unless you read the fine print, you thought it was 8 HP.

Yeah well hp is still figured the same, namely; Torque times rpm over 5250;
so 8 ftlbs at 3100 is 4.75 hp.
The bigger the piston, the more power it will have,
so don't fool with the mini pistons.
The biggest decks will have the most power.
Self-propelled will be more powerful
Baggers will be more powerful.
19" and smaller decks with no extras will be the least powerful. However, these will move off your yard quicker cuz you can price them down into Kid-affordable, for the enterprising young fella that wants a summer job.
Best of luck to you.

as a rule of thumb, i consider anything measured in CCs as junk

oh-boy,
I once had a 1000cc hiway cruiser ; fantastic motorcycle. Oh wait sorry, that was 61 cubes. Pos

try to keep up, were talking small engines, lawnmowers, snowblowers that kinda stuff

I don't know, but if it's a Briggs, subtract 1 HP.
That I do know.

My craftsman is a torque rating (18.5?) but I think I'd rather have a torque beast to swing the big blade instead of a high rpm screamer as it doesn't get above 3000? I have a wimpy snowflake electric mower picked up for free amd that thing is a pos. 24v out of 2 UPS batteries in series spins a light blade that can barely cut the tops of the dandelions and bag them . I was going to use the motor for a bike electrification but have not attacked it yet as its really a wimp.

Any plans on running custom (re)ground cams or maybe a shelf grind? Just make sure you don’t use Tecumseh lobes. Way too slow. Get the fast rate cam lobes designed for B&S’s:rolleyes:

ask a jr dragster parent how to make them fast. i teched cars at gateway in madison il for 14 years and some them "sumbiches" was faster than the door cars. 6.90 in the 1/8 mile.

I've been real happy with my 2004 Craftsman rider with the largest singe Kohler made- 18 HP.

You can not get the HP rating and here is why.
Back in the early 1990's B&S along with others got there *** handed to them by the Fed's for lying about there advertised HP ratings. Gone went the HP ratings as they were not even close to what they actually were when they had to use S.A.E. methods.
I worked for Tecumseh at the time and we were caught with or pants down and had to do alot of fast talking and changed everything to CC advertised.
Honda Motor USA was the one that blew the whistle to the Fed's.

I have a 196 CC engine that is rated at 6.5 hp. Going to use it to build a "hybrid" handi cap scooter. The scooter uses two 12 volt lawn mower starter batters in series (24V), and doesn't have a lot of range. Going to couple the engine to a 24 volt GM alternator to keep the batteries charged up. I built one about 15 years ago, for "proof of concept, and it worked well on smooth ground. But the engine I used was for stationary use and the carb didn't like bouncing around on grass or dirt. This way my wife will be able to go to the large car shows, and/or the race track with me.

Nope, can't do it, as the only compatible lifters available for them right now are made out of poorly machined Chinesium, and they'll wipe-out that cam in about 15 minutes.
