Hi, has anyone put a Grant steering wheel into an early A? Given that reproductions are incredibly expensive, too shiny, and not currently available, I'm looking at a Grant 974 as it is similar to the late 60's woodgrain from Darts/Barracuda's, for my '64 Dart. My question is, 'has anyone installed a Grant Classic wheel in an early A? Did you have make adapters to mount it and get the horn working?

I haven't installed one of these lately, but back in the 70s I had done a few. They are pretty much straight forward with their install equipment and directions. I like that wheel and it should show well with a lot of models.
Someone should help out with first hand knowledge but I believe it should work well.

You would need to be more specific about year and model. They have drop down menu's to find the install kit you would need. They also list a tech support number on their website that I would call first.

My next step will be to call Grant; wanted to consult my go-to-experts first ;-)

I installed one on my 65 Dart. My horn would beep when I turned the wheel so I just unhooked the horn and the relay.

Just put a Grant wheel on my '74 Dart.

As A56 said, go to this Grant site and use the pull-down menus to specify what vehicle you have and it will tell you what install kit you need. The kit includes a horn adapter.

Grant has installation kits for all the wheels they make. You just need the right one. I put a Mooneyes red metalflake wheel in my 64 and used a Grant installation kit. I had to make a spacer for the adapter so the wheel cup wouldn't hit the steering column. I just cut the end of a cheap socket off the proper width and used it. Worked well. You could possibly have to do something similar.

Don't waste your money on the grant adapters. They're cheap pot metal. I used one from Forever Sharp that was billet aluminum. Here's a picture of my grant wheel on my 66 Barracuda.

Greasyfingers,
Love that call out. I looked up Forever Sharp, looks like they put out a nice product.
I'll look closer, Thanks
The wheel looks great too.

Mine was not pot metal. It's aluminum. not billet I don't believe, just cast aluminum. It's worked just fine so far. So have millions of others. I am certain the billet ones are better though.

Rusty I'm with you. All the ones I'm messed with were all cast Al. Worked fine.
Looks like the Forever Sharp are next level quality.
I'm going to read up some.

you can install with the correct adapter, but you can forget about the horn or the signal canceling cam. I got tired of not using the horn and put the woodgrain wheel back on and leather wrapped the cracked wheel.

That's funny. Somebody shouldda told me because my horn and turn signals work fine.

The Grant adapter is a pot metal POS that will strip out the 3 bolts for the horn . And worst mine slid down the splined joint too far and when the column nut gets tightened the horn ring will contact the blinker switch and the horn will sound sometimes when turning. I did not know the about Forever Sharp adapter I would give that a go. In addition most of the repro blinker switches are cheap crap, while you are in there with this mess I would put a good quality NOS switch and save a lot of grief.

I was able to get one to work just fine on a 66 dart about 20 years ago but have not been able to get one to work on any car since, including a 66 charger. they contact the horn contact and when you back it off the steering wheel eventually gets loose. glad to hear someone got one to work.

Have a Grant on my 65.
Everything works as it should.
Stripping the aluminum adapter, and the horn not working properly is all operator error.

The Grant adopter # for early "A"s is 4310, this is for Darts, and B-Cudas thru 66. I put one on my 66, along with adopter, and it works just fine, no problamentos.
