60s 727s vs 70s 727s

So I'm trying to put a car together for a friend and I went to my transmission core pile and I see a lot of 66 to 70 dated cores along with a few 74 to 78 cores.

I'm thinking the latter ones are better to use and get parts for but I will admit, I don't know much about torqueflight.

So are there any advantages to either one. I believe they are ALL non lockup. I don't think I've ever had a lockup type before because 78 is the newest I've ever had.

Where's the automatic guys?

My cars are all automatic, but I don't build them myself...

I used to have a guy... He died, now I'm looking for another guy that can build them right....

Luckily I have a few from the good guy waiting for a car to go in...

Yea, I heard that everyone that builds a trans for you dies.......... so I'm stay'n away:rofl:!!:poke::poke::rofl:
 
I think generally, newer is better. Lockup are easy to id--they have a smooth area at the tip of the front shaft much like a stick gearbox pilot shaft

Don't forget that "about" pre---ish 68, you have no revers light function in the trans, and small converter snout.
 
71 up has the wider bushing in the front drum and wider stator on the back of the pump. It may or may not stabilize the drum better. Also they have part throttle kick down. Kim

You can also add the part throttle to earlier transmissions. Check your numbers and see if any are HP transmissions. Also use a 4.2 kickdown lever or as close to that as you have on hand.

By 1971 the 727 was pretty much dialed in. So when ever I can, I use the 71 to 75/76 stuff, especially if it came behind a performance engine; but for a stock type build, this is less important; just stay away from the 66 and older stuff, because of the old-style convertor.

That's real good news because I found a 76/7 HP one that was behind a 400.

The absolute oldest i found is 1966 and I do have quite a few 66 to 70 and only a slim pick of 71 and up.

Take the pan off to make sure it has the part throttle kickdown. If it doesn't have it, then just use that trans for a few parts, but not much in the front of it especially the front drum.

The 76/77 HP will have the part throttle kickdown. They all did starting with 1971.
 
I wouldn't even mess with one that didn't already have everything in it correctly. OP already said they didn't know much about the differences in TFs, so I say use one that's all original that has the stuff in it that you want. Start switching TF parts around and you have a no-go situation.
