I just scored a running 71 dodge 360..
pretty pumped, this will be the beginning of a stroker for my duster.
are these the blocks everyone is looking for?
i am wondering if the j heads are 202.s. how do you guys think i did?

You’ve left out a key detail. Without stating what price you paid, we can’t comment on how you did.

If you got it for free or $10 then attaboy! If you paid $3,500 then you didn’t do well at all.

If this is what you were looking for, who cares what we think? This isn’t Facebook.

Mileage? All OEM 360's had 1.88" intake valves, even when they started the 4 barrels in '74. But Chrysler did use the same 915 castings, just machined differently based on application, 340-4 and 340-6 engines for a few years!

That is the first model year for the 360 and they are sought after. But the thicker bores are an ongoing debate. I never had any sonic-checked, but it can't hurt. Core shift is a concern for any engine when investing a lot and/or going big on the overbore.

450 with tranny...truck 4 sp. motor was complete.
supposedly had 53 k.. but ... again... its gonna become a stroker...
i did hear somewhere that the early 360s were the ones to grab.
feel pretty lucky... the motor was 10 mins from my house..
now the fun begins.. what stroker kit do you folks recommend?
not looking for full on race just something thats quick , reliable , and runs on pump gas.. lets say 400-450 hp? is that obtainable?
not looking for a pat on the back h22a4, but really some advice . locomotion and alot of others here have helped me alot. as this is probably my last build i want it to be my best.and my fellow members have never let me down.... rant over...

Scat cast crank kit should be sufficient for what you want. Balanced kit is the easy button, regular kit is cheaper but then you need to pay someone to balance the assembly. Supposedly the first couple years were thicker walls but there is always potential core shift to contend with so sonic checking is a good idea before sinking a bunch of money into the machine work. For your power level, as long as they aren't thin, any block should work.

The 71 360 was the only 360 with a different compression height piston. They had higher compression from the factory than any of the rest. Cool find!

I know of a 72 360 short block, looks like the only 360 I have seen with actual flat top pistons instead of dished that hasn't been rebuilt. Problem is, there is rust in cylinders, has sat with no heads for many years. still sitting in a Fury wagon, it does still have the hood, unknown if it has been stored with hood up or closed before my son wound up with it....
It is not teh same car (different colors to start with) but I remember the 1st 360 we had in the family was another 72 Fury wagon with a 360, before I was driving age, everyone that did drive it liked the 400 in the 73 much better... power, mileage, and more. For some reason everyone hated that particular 360 back then.... I was ~12-13ish when we had this car, didnt know as much about cars or engines as I do now (not sayin that is alot or anything even now))

you beet me to it !!! in NH right ?? as soon as I seen it I was going to the atm and tell them I was on my way GONE 360 mag in Conn though

Too far from me but you may be able to sell taht granny gear 4 speed (you did say truck) and recoup some of that $450.

My 408 dynoed at 427 hp, and that is with iron heads, so yeah, your goals are realistic

Of course, the real fun of a stroker engine is the amount of torque and when it is available

The 71 is different not because of the piston top. Lots of 360s had flat tops. The 71 pistons actually had a taller compression height and sat up in the bore more than the rest.

do tell. i am hoping it will rev nice and pull hard... just beginning my journey,,,

it is a very modest build
360 out of a RV that i freshened once with the biggest cam that would fit a stock converter, so a compcam 268

then i spun a rod and had it rebuild as a 408

since i kept the steel heads and small cam with 9:1 compression

it is not a high revving engine, power starts tapering off at 5500

but when my dyno sheet starts, at 2800 rpm there allready is 440 FTlbs of torque on tap
that runs up to 470 and 4000 rpm and drops, slightly, to 400 at 5500 rpm

as for HP, at 2800 rpm there is only 240 hp, which spikes at 423 at 5500rpm

i would imagine this is about the bottom of the barrel as far as 408s go
a bigger cam, better heads, more compression, there is plenty left on the table

but as far as cruisers go, this thing is perfect
