Did your 4 Runner have the V6 or the 22RE 4 cylinder? Those V6’s were famous for head gasket leaks.
It had the V6. But after doing head gaskets 3 times before that, I knew what a blown head gasket was (steam out the tail pipe and a funky smell). When the dealer told me it was another blown head gasket, I told him that he was wrong. But he said it didn’t matter - would I turn down a free engine? I said go for it. The real problem the engine had was the knock sensor harness had corrosion on the connectors (under the intake manifold). The problem showed up again with the new engine. I changed the knock sensor on my own and the problem was finally resolved (because I cleaned the corrosion off of the connectors). I sold that car to my neighbor and they drove it for another 100K miles before giving it to their son. He drove it for another 75K and then sold it for what I sold it to my neighbor for originally. That SUV really held its value!
