Replacing Ticking Hydraulic Lifters

Hi, working on sorting out a few issues on my recently rebuilt 360.

Primary concern is the lifters are ticking pretty good (in my opinion loud). My engine machinist is suggesting I replace and break in a new set of lifters given when I took the mopar performance lifters out of the box the plungers were stuck, I thought if I broke them loose and soaked them they would be ok but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I initially started with a 3/4 turn preload and now I'm up to 1 1/4 preload and the engine didn't much quieter. Can or should you add more preload?

I guess i'm partially venting and asking which hyd. lifters should I get? I hope I'm not asking a loaded question like which oil should I use...fingers crossed. I have searched and read good and bad about every lifter. Take that with a grain of salt.

What seems to have my attention at the moment are:
Huges 5001
Isky quiet lifters ISK-3912-A-HY
Crower cam savers 66031X3-16

I looked on Johnson's and Morels website but I didn't find a part number and I'm not really wanting to spend 3-400$ on hyd. lifters. But if they were a little more I could be ok with that.

max rpm 5 to 5500
75lbs oil pressure
crane adj rockers
smith Brothers solid pushrods
mopar performance cam and lifters part number: P4529959

Did you physically take them apart and clean them out? Or just soak them?

I gently broke the loose and soaked them. Afterwards they moved freely with a pushrod while soaking in oil. It didn't cross my mind to take them apart.

for the cost of some gaskets i'd take them apart and try again (assuming there's nothing bad inside them when they're apart). obviously keep them in order. re the preload, 3/4 is plenty and i wouldn't go any more.

I've had great luck with a mixture of half ATF and half Marvel Mystery oil freeing up what you're describing. On one small block I was able to use a drinking straw to feed some down to each lifter by squeezing it between the pushrod and pushrod hole in the head. A few light taps on top of the rocker arm with a wrench or small hammer and then let sit for 10-15 minutes. May be worth trying, before a teardown and clean.
 
Run it around and let it rip with a quart of Marvel Mystery oil. New lifters are next if you can get any quality ones.
 
There is a almost a new post daily about lifters ticking. I will be yanking my manifold soon for the same thing. Mine start making noise after it warms up. UGGH
 
Quit playing games and just take some out and apart to inspect. If they are dirty Inside then clean them out. If they are clean inside then replace.

Crower Cam Savers.

First I would pour in a quart of Lucus oil treatment an see if that helps. It fixed the tic in my 99 5.9 Durango.

It's all in the oil. lol
I never had a problem using 20w/50w with hyd lifters. 10w/40w during winter.
A good zinc fortified oil. never a flat cam, ticking lifter or wasted bearing.
 
HyLift Johnson lifters are sold by Crower, Comp, Mike Jones and others. They are a quality product.

Johnson Lifter no longer makes hydraulic lifters.

Hang on to you hat when you see the increase in prices.
 
I be damned. I would replace them. There was an issue for a time where people were getting big block lifters in small block cam packages. They are not the same as the oil bands are in different locations. The big block lifters will tick in a small block. I wouldn't chance it either way.
 
I would run your oil pump with a drill and priming rod and spin the engine to make sure they all pump up correctly before putting intake manifold back on.

Some people are using old Mopar factory lifters after having them re crowned becausue they cant find a quality Hyd lifter anymore.
