340 Lifter failure, now what

-
I have a set of Comp 821-16 lifters that look pretty good. Not much to go wrong with them and they look like they use a quality snap ring for the insert. Based on previous posts regarding lifter quality, I've checked them on my granite plate with a test indicator to evaluate the radius, at least to verify it is there and fairly consistent. Without an electronic test indicator that will record as you go or a coordinate measuring device, actually mapping the profile on each would be difficult and time consuming. I'm satisfied with what I have seen. If I had any concern about it, I'd send them out to be reground before I install them. I think that Rocker Arms Unlimited does it for pretty reasonable cost.

Is that what goes wrong with them ? they do not rotate in the lifter bore and on the cam lobe?

From what I gather, that can be one issue. There may be others and hydraulics have more opportunities than solids regarding their internal components.

Yes, i do know that they need that convex base for the rotation feature. If it is flat it wont work properly. I used to touch the bases of two lifters together and see if they "rock" but that is an inaccurate way to check.

Kind of like this.

If the lifters don't spin in the bores you can flatten a cam in a matter of minutes.

I won’t run it if they don’t spin in the bores just turning it over by hand. With the rest of the valve train ready to run. Lashed etc, I run EDM solids from comp.

Yeah, 3 grades which I would classify as not so good, a little better, maybe better.

I think I will be going with the Lunati Micro-Trols. Firstly, I like the snap ring addition, and secondly, Lunati is what my friend runs in his Hemi. Additionally, 72Blunblu has these exact lifters is his 340 and they it seems that my car build ends up similar path as his... lol.

Also, Crower seems to be very secretive about their lifters... why would I buy without a description in the listing, not even a sales pitch attempt... so while they may be great lifters, I have to question quality based on effort to present them to the prospective buyers...

One of Crower's engineer's is a forum member here, I dont recall his handle.
Maybe someone will chime in that know's him. I would like to hear an answer to your concerns' .

I do recall a member on here not long ago *****'n about Lunati lifters.
Thats what started my debaucle. I had 2 fail. Went with a set of comp cams and they get noisey after it heats up. Trying to figure out the best way to go. I had no idea so many people were having issues with hydraulic lifters. It is really crazy.

So switch to solids and leave the HFT cam in? I would do that switch but I didn’t think a HFT cam and a solid lifters would last. Different length push rods, adjustable rockers and solid lifters with a stock HFT cam and call it good? That is all you need?

Current developments.
Bought the Crower Cam Saver lifters.
Today I pulled intake.
7 retainer clip failures total.
4 bent pushrods (1 looked like a Z)
Cam isn't the most beautiful, but all old lifter were worn with a circular pattern so that means it was ok...
Not sure how the engine ran as well as it did right now... because it probably shouldn't have...

And you had good oil pressure? I think you had more than a tick. Damn. So are you replacing the cam?
