Crankshaft Oil Seal Question

Is the crankshaft oil seal on a 1965 273 removed by prying it out from the front of the timing chain cover or do you remove the timing chain cover and pry it out from inside of the cover?
The replacement timing chain cover I got had the seal still in it so I decided to replace it before I installed the cover. I thought I could knock out the seal by placing the cover front side down and knock it out from the rear. Seal would not move after beating on a punch several times. Took a small chisel and after hitting the outside edge of the seal it came loose and when I removed it I found out that the seal was pressed against a round lip in the cover.
Just wondering if this is the correct cover for this year 273.
