Need a favor from those with SBM and power steering.

Belt is not bottoming. Sits pretty flush with the top of the pulleys. Also the bottom of the pulley is dull and oxidized. Belt is tight. I have even over tightened to check effect. No difference. Looking for pulley. Why are GM $30 and Mopar $80???? Appears to be 6.8" . GM is 5.8"

There is one way you can check to see if it's a slipping belt/pulley issue. Go to your local industrial supply house & buy a can of BELT DRESSING. Take the belt off and spray some on rag & wipe the belt with it until the belt is slightly sticky. Put the belt back, retighten it & try again. If the squealing stops, It's either the belt, the power steering pulley or the crank pulley, If not, at least you've eliminated pulleys & belts as the issues. I used belt dressing spray extensively in my career as an industrial mechanic [37yrs] to temporarily stop slippages until I had time to replace belts or pulleys.

One experiment I did was to buy a fractional horsepower belt at Grainger. They are made out of different material and had no cogs. People say cogs are not good, but those are about the only auto belts you can buy. The one I bought was 3/8 width, so it wasn’t the same width, but worked. Squealing stopped. I don’t know if they are rated for auto use, so I was a little unsure about running it long term. I sanded my auto belt after that and tried again and it didn’t squeal anymore. Sorry that didn’t work for you. I chased this forever with no luck till the end.

When I installed the serpentine conversion shown in my previous post I developed a squealing noise which turned out to be the water pump impeller rubbing the water pump housing. Evidently it was pressed on the shaft just a little to far and the extra tension of the serpentine belt on the pulley caused the impeller to make contact. New water pump and everything good again. Something else for you to consider.

Had some buried in the back of my storage shelves.

it appears now the the screech starts at 3000 rpm as opposed to 2300 rpm before. Unfortunately I have been working the carb from outside the car so I don't know what action caused the bump.

My gates belt is a non cog.

Which pulley do you need, I have some in back stock? Crank and P/S pulley?

Progress!!!!!! I have an adjustable emergency belt and tried to isolate PS with crank and it was good. Next crank and water pump. Good. WTF. I put an old non cog belt I had on installed all 3 pulleys and it was good. Then I installed the viscous fan and it came back!!!!. Kind of makes sense that with engine speed the clutch kicks in however I am also wondering if the extra weight on the water pump bearing could be causing the noise. I have 3 fans but they cannot mount directly to the water pump. Really difficult to pinpoint the sound because of the fan moving air in the shroud plus the engine screamin. Anyway....I am going to find a new fan/clutch. I'll report back.

Thanks for helping me work through this. Really appreciated.

I believe I referenced the fan multiple times. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a bad clutch. The weight of the fan and the drag is a lot for one belt to handle hence the slipping. Main reason I went to electric fan and serpentine setup. Hopefully you’ve got it figured out now.

I was thinking water pump too, but when you put water on the belt and it quieted it down. I was stumped :BangHead:

I agree 100% but I have been running the same configuration for over 10 years. Parts wear and fail. Hoping it's going to be the fan clutch. I am currently building a 5.9 magnum and this set-up is going onto that engine. Would like to carry over the serpentine set-up but would need to replace alt, ac, ps, crank and add electric fuel pump. Nah.

Got my replacement viscous fan clutch today and installed it. Guess what???? Not the issue. Ugh!!!
I removed it again and ran without the fan and clutch. No screech. Gotta be the extra weight hanging off the end of the
water pump making bearing noise or as Mopar73340 said impeller rubbing but I would think that would happened at any
RPM. Any other thoughts? I would really hate to replace the water pump without that being the issue.

Have you tried running it with just the pulley and no fan in case there's a crack in the fan somewhere? Otherwise, I think were back to the water pump.

I have another 5 blade fan I could try. It will need to mount to the clutch fan due however. Easy enough to do. I don't have one that I can bolt directly to the pump. I'll ask around my buds for a loaner. Car runs spot on temperature wise now. Thanks.
