16:1 manual steering

-
Hope PST will come out with a 20:1 box to split the difference between the 16:1 and 24:1. I have the Flaming River 16:1 box with a small block and 19565R15 front tires. It's a ***** to turn backing out of the driveway with a stick. I'm about 230lbs and it's becoming a bit much. Simply not enjoyable to drive. I actually prefer the 24:1 factory box's feel but the front wheels jump all over the place whenever I hit a bump whereas the Flaming River box stays straight. I'm gonna try to set the caster to factory specs as I have tubular upper control arms with more caster built in. Although I haven't been to the track I have made a number of full throttle pulls up to 3rd gear with the 16:1 box and no issues.

I drove a 440 Challenger with 24-1, and 20-1, boxes.
If it was my daily driver I'd go with the 20-1.
I counted lock to lock with both boxes and the 20-1 reduced the number of wheel turns by ONE.
Ok, this doesn't sound like much, but it makes a huge difference in driving pleasure.
I had the problem of having to slow down for 90degree turns just to get caught up with my steering!

The reason being is that we supply these with grease unlike original. We felt that it needed it for the expansion and contraction of the grease. This is the way that we have offered them since we started reproducing.

Thanks

I'm really liking the 16:1 box. My tired old 24:1 box was like driving an old Ford truck. The 16:1 box changed the response time so much that it's like a modern car in that a slight input will move the car left or right. As others have stated slow parking lot driving is a more of a pain, but not too bad, just be rolling before you turn the wheel.
If your on the fence about buying one as I was just do it you will love the difference!

Awesome to hear the good reviews on the pst 16.1 box, the price was right cant wait to swap out my 24.1 box. Cant steer fast enough to keep up with the 440, lol

Anybody have any experience with the Jegs manual box? they are marked down to $269 right now.. not many reviews on them

With the members discount ours is $278 with free shipping and they are in stock and ready to ship. I did check Jegs and they do not have an availability date at this time so that could be an issue. Do you know if their case on their box is iron or aluminum?

Thanks

Just put your forum "handle" in the comment section of their order form and ask for the 10% FABO discount and they adjust it before billing your credit card...

Pst 16-1 box update. Installed on my duster stiffer than the 24-1 original box, I new it would be it drives so much better not as much wandering, now I can go sideways while doing a burnout with confidence that I can steer fast enough to keep up! Was a great price and I am glad I pulled the trigger on mine.

So just noticed the new pst box I received has the vent hole but no cotter pin? Does that pin matter?

Our box has been designed to use grease ( similar to later designed manual boxes) instead of heavy weight oil. The hole in the cap is to allow expansion during heat cycles.

Today, I just finished installing completely new front suspension/steering :QA1, Proforged, column, etc., and my PST box.

Last thing, the newly rebuilt column from Norm's, set the ride height, torqued everything, etc.

PST box has 1/4 play in it, steering wheel moves a complete 1/4 turn standing still or moving and nothing happens.

Definitely in the box, can turn the steering shaft at the box with the car on the ground.

What worries me is I'm unable to locate this scenario anywhere. Anyone experience this on a new box?

Called PST multiple times, couldn't get someone on the line, sent pm thru fabo.
I get it, businesses are closed on weekends and Fridays are tough, and not sure PST responds here on weekends.

Problem is, I scheduled an alignment for next week, and more importantly I promised the kid a ride tomorrow, dammit.

If the engine isn't running, a power steering box will have a lot more play in it than if it is running. Another area where you can have steering slop is in the coupler if it isn't assembled correctly. I'm assuming that your pitman arm and the rest of the steering linkage is in good shape.

pretty sure he’s talking about a manual box, not power.

Oh, I see the heading now......sorry. Make sure the manual box is centered.....as in the worm gear needs to be half way between the two stops to check the adjustment. If it is, and you have play internally, the box is bad.

the worm gear needs to be half way between the two stops to check for adjustment

I get the halfway part, it cranks completely from side to side.
If there is an adjustment it is not clear what it is exactly, and should a new box really need it?

I have two FSMs, although this car is a 67, one is for a 62 and one for a 64, identical.
Only 2 adjustments are listed, worm bearing preload, which imo I shouldn't have to do, and ball nut rack and sector mesh, which doesn't appear to apply to this issue, not sure, and should this be something a new box needs?

If it matters, the steering shaft only goes on one way, Norm's clearly marked it and provided instructions. Nice piece.

Yes, definitely manual.

Thinking of finally upgrading my old steering box. Guys with 16:1. Specifically PST, how are you liking them? Any regrets?
I Run 26x6 frontrunners so maybe parking won't be as much of a pain in the ***.

I .having a similar problem with a PST 16:1 box. Everything is new in the front and I was getting a little "play" at the wheel. Come to find out it is the shaft that holds the pitman arm. It is moving Bout 1/8 to 1/4" side to side as I trand sitting from left to right. Can that be "adjusted" out?

The sector shaft is actually moving sideways in the housing (axial movement)? Maybe they forgot to put the needle bearings in the housing when they assembled it. If the movement is rotational, it's something in either the pitman arm or steering linkage.

Either the upper bearing is bad or the end play adjustment is way out of whack.
