Hey, all. I'm trying to darken my patina paint job. I brought it out to a polish from 600 grit to 3000 and the blue ended up lightening up a little too much and the undercoat (original color) started shining through heavily in areas. If at all possible, I want everything to come out darker and have been considering dyes and acetone or mixing in dyes with penetrol to seal it all in and make it pop. This is my first rodeo. I'm not certain if any of this will work. But hopefully someone else has been here and has some good advice/pics of what they did. I was going to use a powder-based dye in acetone or in the penetrol. I'm just wondering can I dye the existing paint job before the penetrol or not? Also, I'll be painting on stripes and was wondering if that can go over the penetrol coat or does it need to be underneath it.

What's penetrol? If I have to go look something up, that raises my pay scale.

I have used penetrol to on interior oil base paints. It thins it so brush marks are not visible when painting trim. I do not believe this is what you are referring to. If so, I would not use it on a car.

penetrol works like magic in oil based paints
but as stated i wouldn’t use it in or on automotive paints and wouldn’t use it as sealer anytime.

It works great but leaves a kinda tacky film, not great in dusty/ dirty conditions

I’ve heard of people using tung oil as a clear coat over steel. It cures really hard but has a long drying time. I think penetrol would work similarly, but like others have said, it’s designed to work with oil so I don’t know if it would go well with an epoxy paint. Now if this is a rustoleum paint job then i say slap it on...

Either way can’t hurt to test it right?

Penetrol is commonly used. But stays tacky for too long.
Im going to mop on some clear coat on my 51 fargo. I want the wet look.
