Anybody running 10s with a small block and factory iron heads

-
Not I, but I seen it many times. One was a 3200 lbs all steel Dodge Demon running 10's, and not with just cast heads but a cast intake as well :)

Are you asking about as cast factory heads ?

Building a engine in this fashion would be pretty crappy on the street. The/those cams have lobes like little rectangles. Very few people build an NRHA Stock & SUper Stock engine to drive the street. There are a few members here doing engines and racing with dead stock heads.

Hysteric would be one if I’m correct. He certainly sticks in his two cents on this route all the time.

He would not need to run a stock eliminator cam. And super stocker run solid rollers as their no lift rules...

There was a time when all racers had were factory iron heads.

Got a friend who has run mid 9’s with 308 iron heads on a stock stroke 340 at around 2700 pounds race weight.
There are some on here who know him and the car.

Just wanted to check and see if anybody else has had good success with iron heads

Maybe it’s a secret code, or was typed with invisible text....... but I don’t see the word “street” anywhere in the original post.

In the early stages of when my friend first decided to try his hand at Stock, we were still pretty green at it and were trying to figure the cam situation out.
After about the 5th cam...... we decided to do an experiment to see if it was worth continuing down that path.
So, we put the small Ultra Dyne solid lifter cam he had in the motor when it was a street/strip car.
Stocker cam #5= 12.28
Normal cam = 11.86
Done on consecutive weekends.

Stocker cams are not some silver bullet for great ET’s.
They are what they are to satisfy the rules....... and are a performance liability.

That combo ended up running deep into the 11’s with the very same short block as when the car was being driven on the street.
TRW pistons, stock cast rods, std rings...... everything.

My car has ported J heads, they are not real big, 2.02 valve still have the 3/8 stem, engine is a 360 with flat top pistons, .510 lift cam, this year it has been consistent low 6.70s in 1/8 mile and 10.60s in the 1/4

Factory iron heads? .....yes! Stock stroke 360,KB piston, flat tappet, old Crane non roller rockers, Vic 340 intake, topped with a period correct ancient BG carb :)

I ran 10s for years with W2 heads as fast as 11.35 with ported J heads

That car just looks slick! Are J heads ported extensively? What rear gear? Is it pretty street friendly? Thanks.

There is a guy at my local track with a Demon that is a NHRA stock class racer. (J stock auto if I recall correctly) He runs 10.7-10.8 with a "stock" 340 + 200 lbs of weight in the trunk.....his engine probably costs more than my whole car, lol.

A Demon would probably run E or F/SA with a 340, it is amazing how fast those stocker 340s run, very impressive!
