As a quick check and adjustment, you could do it in the car, but, I'd still want to pull the box apart to verify the internals are not damaged. You need to loosen that huge lock ring nut on the upper bearing cap. Then thread the bearing cap into the box more to tighten up the clearance. Just hand tight to take up all the slack. Hold the bearing cap from turning and retighten the big nut. I like to do it out on the bench so you can better tell what the bearing preload is. You may also have to readjust the backlash setting too.
