Please help! If this post shouldn't be here I apologize, I just figured there would be more likelihood of someone having this setup here.

I just dropped a fresh 360 in my 68 valiant with a set of Doug's Headers and I am playing hell finding a good route for my shifter cable that doesn't want to lay on the headers. With the 5.2 magnum I took out of the car and the cheap hedman type headers I didn't have near as much issue with this.

Is there anyone who has put a LA small block with Doug's Headers and a cable shifter that can provide some guidance.

Thank you in advance

I have TTI headers in a Dart Sport & had to use thick, long HD tie wraps to pull on the cable to keep it away from the headers. Use 2 and keep checking on them. I worry about them getting brittle & eventually breaking. You might be able to find something existing to use as an attachment point for the zip ties or add something to the firewall. A clamp might be better, as long as the cable doesn't get kinked or bent too much.

Buy a spare cable.....just in case.

Did you run your straight out and loop under and back the way the instructions call for on the shifter instructions? Or did you deviate it left or right significantly? I am wondering if I can loop it over the bellhousing or up under the master cylinder, although this will lead to a pretty tight turn behind the starter and I will still have one tube to deal with.

I had the same problem until I got the shortest toughest cable (36” B&M) and was able to keep the cable behind the down swoop of the header tubes.
Not a single issue with it since, and the shorter stiffer cable has less deflection that made the shifter a little mushy in it’s response.

I'd have to take a look at one car I have here. But from what I recall, I have a hole cut in the top of the trans tunnel in line with the shifter, which is on the trans centerline. Basically, as the cable leaves the trans, it arches up and and curves back along the side & not quite to the top of the bellhousing towards the shifter. I can see if I can take a decent pic tomorrow, if that might help.

I always use a heat resistant sheath over the cable in the area of the exhaust, you can get them from Summit or Jegs. Half of my cable is on top of the trans in a big loop and it solved a bunch of issues. and like someone said, get a spare cable. Once you have one you'll never need it:thumbsup:

Which shifter? Cable in from the front or rear? A picture would be great. Might get some good ideas. As of now, here's what we're dealin with.

Its a megashifter on a 904, I have had the shifter for 25 years new in the box finally decided to put it in something. Typically mounting location bolts to the mount on the front left corner of the pan facing towards the back of the car.

Str-12-340 mentioned what I did on my old car.... Fire-sleeve! Ran most of my cable through that and never had a prob again. They had it in bulk at my local airport where my buddy was a mechanic

I had a couple of feet of this and put it on, and was able to get it to work as long as that stuff keeps it cool enough. I touched the outside to some coals burning hot in my wood stove before putting it on and it didn't leave a mark.

Don't know what shifter you have but I managed to convert my b&m pro stick to rear exit from the shifter and comes around to the trans from the rear like the turbo action shifters for the torque flite do.

Thats clearly the best long term plan, if I buy a new shifter that will be the requirement. I don't think I could make that work with the old Megashifter I have in the car.

I was only able to make this work for my shifter, because of the addition of the shiftnoid air shifter bracket. I did not plan on the rear exit cable. I just realized afterwards that I potentially could make that modification. I have burned up 2 previous front exit cables.
If I had to buy a new shifter all over again, I would buy the turbo action shifter that is rear exit on a torque flite and is a very nice shifter to boot.

The B&M with the supplied cable you need to come out the passenger side and under the back of oil pan. I have that setup in both a A & B body

So you are saying this is not the correct routing? Do you have a picture of the routing you are mentioning?

What he is proposing is an alternative. Instead of routing a loop near the headers on the drivers side, bring the cable out the passenger side, like a gm, then loop it under the engine because of the front entry on a mopar.
Kinda depends on how long the cable is, whether that will work.

That routing is difficult to keep clear of the headers.
Many go around the passenger side and under the front of the bell housing with a 4 ft cable to keep the cable clear of the headers.
Yah its difficult to avoid the headers for sure with B&M recommended routing, I think going under the motor there would still 1 tube to deal with. If it gives me any issue I will try going the under the motor routing if I end up having more issues. Right now it is working and I have too much other stuff to deal with on this car. LOL

I've heard it's better with a 4 ft cable than the standard 5 ft, at least on the B&M shifters.

So I finally installed my 4' heavy duty B&M cable and its a ton better. I had to bend it tight right by the starter bump to get it on but it works great and I can keep it out of the headers. I will never try a 5 footer again.
