I had a 408 stroker built by a local builder. He made the assumption that I was going to run an electric fuel pump, but I want to go with a high flow mechanical. The motor is only 450hp tops, and I don't plan on making it make more (cast crank). He put the pictured below on the left spacer timing chain retainer on with a bolt and lock washer. I picked up an eccentric pictured bottom right, the bolt, and cupped washer. Should I be able to bolt it right on with some lock tight or is there something else I should be considering here? The eccentric has some pitting, I figured I could just clean up with some fine grit sand paper.

I would just blot it up (guy on the right) after cleaning it and go....I still have the guy on the right on my race motor, and I haven't had a mechanical fuel pump for over 20 years, lol.

LOL. Race motor = way more ponies than I have or plan on having. Thanks for the help! I heard there are two types of timing chains, one works with eccentric, one does not. Any truth to that?

Use a drop of loctite on the bolt. Make sure to line up the eccentric and cup washer correctly. Make sure the clamp load is applied between the cam and gear. 65'

How do you ensure the correct clamp load is applied? Is that dictated by the rotation of the cam? Is the key on the nose a marker? Where should it be located, ie 12 oclock?

To get proper clamp load the cup washer needs to clear the keyway and apply the clamp load to the gear face. The eccentric has a cutout to clear the keyway make sure you line everything up properly. 65'

Small blocks have a separate eccentric, big blocks don't. On BB's the eccentric is ground into the cam.

Depending on how deep that pitting is, I would get a new one. It would just bug me and I have heard of them wearing through. Especially with a high volume pump.

35 ft/lbs on cam bolt. It will just ensure the cam cog is fastened. No other measurements are needed.
