Cold Case Radiator Shroud?

Is anyone running a shroud on thier cold case radiator? If so what are you using? I have a Cold Case MOP755A 22 inch radiator in my 69 cuda. I have a 360 with the 70 up aluminum water pump, so I have the passenger side lower return hose.

The way the Cold Case shroud mounting flange is made, the factory shroud will fit, but does not seal well on the top or bottom. I need something that fits better. I am using a 7 blade clutch fan.

One of the members designed a nice adapter that fills the gaps of the OEM shroud to make it much more efficient. It didn't look all that complicated. He posted a bunch of pics on these forums. So if you do a search, it should come up. I'm sorry but I can't remember his user name. He's from the Syracuse NY area and installed the same radiator on his Dart GT? I believe.

If the 360 motor and WP have caused the OEM shroud to not fit, then CC has another 22" model for electric fan/shroud kit.
 
I've got that same radiator on my Duster 340 with the factory shroud. It is cooling well for me but I know the gap you refer to. I saw a thread here where a guy took out the mounting threads in that channel and did some slight mods to the shroud and actually slid it down in the channel for a tight fit. It looked really good and closed the gap. You can search for it here and he showed exactly how it was done. Not all that complicated and looked good.

Thanks for the info. I don’t have a good oem shroud, so I don’t really want to spend $$$ for a oem repop and have to modify it to work. Looking for a better / cheaper solution.

I saw an electric fan shroud combo on your website, could I use just the shroud and modify it to fit my engine fan? Do you sell just the shroud?
 
I do and I'm using a stock repop shroud for 70-up 22 radiator. To seal it I used some rubber garage door seal that had a lip and biased the lip to the cor side and pop riveted it to the shroud on the top and bottom. It turned out well. I think I had to clearance the shroud to clear the lower radiator tube. Otherwise it bolted on and the mounting nuts in the radiator are metric. M6 I think.

Yes, we have shroud part #EF755. It does not appear anywhere on our website by itself for good reasons but if you need just the shroud, explain that you already have our radiator, they will sell the shroud to you. Just make sure you have enough space to mount both the shroud and a slim line 16" fan.

also note that our mounting pattern is one of two industry standards and happens to be different than SPAL. If that was your choice, you'd have to redrill fan holes in the shroud.

Are you going to try and modify the Cold Case shroud to work with a mechanical fan?

I was thinking about that, but I think I have a solution. I have kind of copied the ideas in this thread to come up with a solution. I had never thought about removing the threaded inserts and using the channel between the bracket and the core.

I have a couple of slant 6 shrouds. I took one and turned it upside down (offsets are opposite between /6 and v8) and it looked pretty close. I hacked the sides of the shroud up pretty good to get it to fit in the channel, but it fits really nice and the hacking is mostly hid by the channel aluminum. The gap on the top is small, the bottom is a little bigger. They will fill with weather stripping like yours. All I have to do is figure out how to secure it. It fits tight enough that it won’t come out, but it still can move around a little.

I will post some pictures tomorrow when I get back at it.

I saw that post. I didn't have any shrouds to start with so I had to get a repop. Worst you could do is give it a try, I would for sure figure out a way to fasten the shroud from moving. In for pics for sure!

just an fyi, if you were to go with the original idea and use the CC shroud for a mechanical fan, you'd need to build some type of cylinder on that shroud to create a suction affect. As delivered, putting a fan in that shallow of a shroud would not pull much air beyond the hole opening area of the rad.
 
You did not mention that you have a cooling problem, do you need a shroud? Or do you just want one?

Mine gets hot at idle. The temperature just keeps rising. It cools down when moving and stays right at the thermostat temp of 180.

Long story, but when I changed my radiator and went with the cold case, my old shroud did not fit. I made my own shroud out of a Ford Explorer shroud ( two top halves) and it turned out really nice, but the fan was way deep in the shroud and that made it worse at idle.

I mocked up a thin shroud where the fan was about half out and it helped a lot. However it was installed with aluminum furnace tape for the test, not a permanent solution. So now I am trying to come up with a better solution.

Then got the mop 756A CCRad. It's the same radiator that you have, but the bottom inlet is opposite side. 195 Flowcooler thermostat. Mopar fan and Hayden #2947 fan clutch, it fits. No shroud, yet. Fairly healthy 418, but I do have Trickflow heads. Haven't had any cooling issues so far, idling or driving.
So what's really that different? Your 360 should be cooling fine. That is what makes me wonder!

I have been fighting the idle overheating for awhile. I have installed a flowkooler water pump, a Milodon high flow thermostat, Hayden 2947 fan clutch 7 blade Mopar fan. I have factory ac also I added.

I went the other way with the water pump, so I lost the 3/4/ inch of clearance.
 
I bought the COLD CASE 22" radiator with their electric fan and shroud kit. I haven't got far enough in the project to install but will post pictures and results when I do.

And Mike I know people are going to argue but try a 195 thermostat , make sure you have a 16 lb cap and see if it doesn't improve your overheating issue (works for me )

Carb might be too lean at idle.
 
Got my shroud fitted and it turned out great so far. It is a slant 6 shroud. The /6 has the fan offset to the opposite side from the V8, so I had to turn it upside down. I ground the sides with a dremel tool quite a bit to get it to go in the channel on the radiator. I put some weather stripping on both sides of the shroud where it fits in the channel. It fits really tight and most of the carving is hidden under the radiator frame.

It does interfere with the transmission cooler lines, but I am not using them anyway. Right angle adapters would solve it if needed.

Got my radiator back in. Runs much cooler with the new shroud. Still only in the 70s here, so no real test. Doesn’t overheat idling now, so that is a very good sign.

I think my shroud was the problem all along. My fan was completely inside the shroud I made. Folks had told me that the fan needed to be half way out of the shroud. I discounted that advice, since every car I have seen for the past 30 years had no exposed fan blades. They were all well inside the shroud.

I have looked at many newer engine driven fans on cars lately and have noticed that the fan blades are shaped very differently. I don’t understand fan design, but obviously (now) it matters. It appears to me that the fan design must match the shroud design for it to work properly as a system. Since I was using an older fan designed for the 1/2 in 1/2 out shroud, I was mismatched.

Don’t know if I could have also got a later model fan designed to be fully enclosed and solved my problem instead of switching the shroud.

Now I am running a Cold case radiator, Hayden 2947 fan clutch, 7 blade Mopar truck fan, flowkooler water pump, Milodon high flow thermostat, and upside down /6 shroud, and all seems well. Summer will tell....
