I am getting ready to soon start my project car, Duster with a 440

What octane pump gas should I use when starting it up or even what octane should I run in the tank?

Any additives or stabilizer suggestions?

This is like telling the group you have teeth and asking what kinda tooth paste you should use... or going to the bar and asking for a beer; you want piss beer or craft beer? Details matter man...

If your compression ratio is low I’d just say regular. I run premium in all my vehicles because of 10.5:1 compression.
 
So, I run a 50/50 mix of 90 octane “rec” fuel, which has no ethanol, and 110 Turbo Blue, which has lead. I have a 440 in that car, and the big iron likes to have a fuel with a longer burn, which is the main property of higher octane fuel. I probably net about 102 octane or so, which is what was out at the time, I save my old parts from the ravages of ethanol, and the lead is good for the valve seats. It cost me $60 for 10 gallons, $20 for the Rec fuel and $40 for the 110, it seems to make my car run very well.

I use Stabil 360; about 2 ounces every fill up. It's supposed to address ethanol issues and keeps fuel fresh for 1 year. Previous owner of my road runner recommended it so I just continued the use.

My information is based solely on the fact that you mentioned a 440. Being it’s in a hobby car, I think my suggestion is pretty good, if it was some high compression flame throwing beast I would think about getting a real estimate on power before making any decisions, but since it’s a weekend driver, it’s not that crucial. I like the smell of the 110, and so does my Mom, so I run it.

Cam, comp ratio and built of motor are necessary. Also search “Octane” on the top bar of the forum. There’s a ton of threads talking about this...

Put 1/4 tank of regular and see how it runs if you get destination put in the next higher octane, keep going till you are at the highest octane it will run at.
Keep in mind you should use up the 1/4 tank as much as possible before the next higher grade.

But if you have 1/4 tank of 96 and add 1/4 tank of 98 you effective have around 97.

Some where along the way you can adjust the timming a bit, if need be.

If non alchohal gas is readily available use that.

Engine masters just did an episode on octane,87,91,106 and 110 made the same power and same timing requirements, i would use midgrade or premium.

I see people say this all the time. That is one benefit of ethanol laced gas. It has better detonation resistance. Alcohol has a higher octane than gasoline.

All used in the same motor with a lower comp ratio say 9/1. What about doing the test in a high comp motor say 15/1...

Ethanol absorbs moisture & cause corrosion with some metals. It might take a liking to Holley's wonder metal, Zinc. Some carby needles & seats are also incompatible with E fuel.
