4-BBL carb orientation?

I'm putting a small 4-BBL carb on my slant. The carb is an Edelbrock AVS500, the intake is a Clifford. My thought was the carb should be oriented with the smaller primaries facing either towards or away from the head. It seems to me, that would allow more even and balanced fuel flow down the intake runners.

However, as I fiddled with the carb and which way it should go for best performance and throttle/choke cable access, it becomes apparent the mounting base pad on the intake is angled towards the front of the car. Why is this, and does that have anything to do with how the carb should sit?

For those who have been down this path, I'd be very much interested to see what you did for this situation, and how you liked your choice.
