Are your rear cables binding?? Have you checked that they are free and functioning properly? Something's obviously not right. Installing a thread extension would just just be a bandaid IMO.
If you want, you can measure how much of the rear cables are sticking out past the rear cable anchors and I can compare those numbers to those my 66 Dart.
