What's everybody use for a connecting rod splitter, sometimes called a rod separator or rod departer? I'm not talkin about the really cheap crappola one from ProComp either. Thanks.

I have never used one. I tap the rod bolts with an oak dowel till the cap separates.

Yup, sometimes they are VERY stubborn though. Especially after having them resized.

Wooden or plastic hammer handle works every time. Some times a vise is involved.

I had to use a small soft faced (some kind of very hard but non-marring plastic) hammer. I rotated the rod to where it had the most access free from the bottom of the block, and alternately gave it a whack on one side of the cap angled towards the threads then another whack on the other side. It took a while for some of them as the motor was a grunge-fest inside but it did work and didn't bugger up anything.

Just drill and tap a harbor freight vise, top middle of each jaw or on the side just weld a couple 3/8 bolts with the shoulders sticking out. Electrical tape wrap and yehaw.. you'll have them rods separated faster than Obama's buttcheeks were for the Saudi king. Lol

ewwwwwww

Itd be easy to make that tool but man... you'd have to be using it daily to justify it.

Sure, but if you run an engine shop, you’re done and use it the rest of your career. The rest of us have a harder time justifying the effort. But when time is money, the tools pay for themselves.

I build enough engines to justify one. This last set of slant 6 rods I had resized were TOUGH to separate. I cannot STAND hitting on remanned rods with a hammer.

Why not just pop the nuts off and let it idle for a minute?
You'll know when they are ready to come off

pro form, $62.00 bucks? I've needed one forever and looks like I might try this one. You would think a guy with a machine/welding shop would just make something. I find it alot easier/cheaper/faster just to buy anymore.

They have terrible reviews. I'll never buy one. I'll either make something, or hold out for the Eagle if I can ever find one.

I'm not sure "tapping some holes in a vise" is a terrible idea. I have a couple smaller ones myself that dont get used. Slice some Alum stock to replicate the pic above and mount to the vise. Pretty quick deal with a bandsaw and a drill press.
