Hughes Cam in Magnum - who has one?

Looking at a Hughes cam for my carb’ed Magnum conversion in my 84 W100. Looking at the long snout 208/214 or 214/218 cams on the 110 LSA. Looking for bottom end pulling torque. Anyone have either of these cams? How do you like?

I have no experience with the cam, but as a general rule, when you increase duration, the power band moves up the rpm scale.
That said, I would think that the low rpm torque is going to be somewhat less then the stock cam.....
For that reason in my ongoing project of putting a carbed 5.9 in my dakota, I stayed with the stock cam, at least for now.

I have had similar duration cams from other companies. The 208* will start making power at approximately 900 - 1,000 rpm while the 214* will start making power at 1,000 - 1,200 rpm’s. The minor swing in starting point power is due to what kind of lobe is used as well as everything else a out the engine.

Ether cam will make very good low end torque.
 
Match the specs of the two cams. Post them if you can.

I will. I don’t plan on running the Magnum with the stock cam though but will let everyone hear and get my opinion of the build. I am hopping for 350hp and about 400 lbs of torque. That is Hughes estimate.
 
What lift do the cams have? Also, I assume you are doing springs as well?
 
0.523/0.533 on lift. Yes, I ordered their spring upgrade too

If you have at least 3.55 gears I think you will like that cam. I have it in my B1500 van and really like it. Gave up little if anything on the bottom, but pulls like a freight train now compared to the stock cam. I installed EQ heads at the same time on my rebuild.
 
I am seriously considering this cam too. I have a 1990 stock short block 360 so compression is pretty low but I have EQ heads with the Hughes springs

It should be 9.0-1, if I’m correct, as delivered stock.
Use a thin head gasket to keep the compression ratio where it is. At 9.0-1, the iron head is fine for the street.
 
I did a compression check and I’m at about 110 psi across the board lol (3000ft elevation). That’s with 302 heads so maybe I messed up the re ring job.

The pre magnum 360's have lower compression pistons, but 110 does still seem low. Do a leak down test and you will know for sure if there is a problem.

You might be in trouble Mac.
Do another Compression Test with a different tester.
 
I pulled the trigger on the 208/214 @0.050 today. We will see what happens!

Wiki says you are at 1565 ft above sealevel.
You never said what size Magnum you have but no matter, if 1565 is correct, you are gonna need a lot more than 9/1 Scr to get any power at all.
Torque will be OK but nothing to get overly excited about.

As it stands he either has to get compression way up, or choose another cam. 1500 ft above sea level isn't that much though. I am at 1000 here in Atlanta, and with a little over 9.1 that cam makes 165psi and runs good in my van- or at least it did when it was a fresh build 30k ago.

165 is great! for torque, but it won't get anywhere near 350/400 horsepower with a 208 cam.
But, the 208*cam will make great torque even at 9/1 and 1565 ft elevation.
OK scratch "great" . At 165psi it's great. At 145 not so much

It may not hit 350 gross hp,but it would be closer than you might think. Remember the stock (crate motor) engine was rated at 300. EQ heads, cam, .5 increase in compression on mine. It would not surprise me if it was 335 or 340. Doesn't matter as it is the torque I was after with my build.
 
Have a Hughes 544 lift cam and their valve springs in a 1988 5.9L Magnum with standard bore Hypertech pistons with stock rods and crank. Engine Quest magnum heads that are lightly ported and gasket match to the M1 Mopar intake. It has Headman headers and mandrel bent exhaust. Has a nice rumble and runs good.
 
390 turbo. Makes great power midrange. I have had 2 Hughes cams and always call Dave to pick one for me.
