You will have much better luck and enjoy it more if you start with a good detector. That being said, even the mid level detectors out now do a decent job compared to 10 years ago.
I have plenty of grand kids to pass the one I got to them and I'm sure I'll want a better one in a year or so. Seems like lots of fun Mike can't wait to get started.
