I actually didn't watch those videos...I tried but couldn't. I'm not big on "video production", because that leads to its own form of poop, but some amount of production is a good thing. I can't count the number of YouTube videos where they take 5:36 to say what they could have said in 1:10 .... and still never mention half of the obvious questions. If I wanted to hear someone use 432 words when 15 would do, I'd find a woman.

But....when you post a video on a technical topic, it's almost a sure sign you're lost. The people who really understand are very seldom talking about it publicly. And as for cylinder heads? The people who really understand the finer details are generally working for major automakers or highly funded specialty houses. A lot more people might have a good platform of knowledge but they tend to form their theories around results, not the other way around.

When I was in high school, there were a bunch of guys who would sit around on the bleachers bragging about all the sex they had with various cheerleaders. The coach walked by one day and laughed at them and said "All you guys bragging about sex oughta take a look at those guys sitting down there keeping their mouths shut...that's cuz they're the ones actually doing it!"
 
I'm not saying this guy don't know his ****. He has too, to be were he is.
I'm saying that he is acting like Warren Johnson. Even retired He not going to give up ****.

I will save my u-tube like button for people like Darin Morgan.........Just saying...............

I’ll say it again...it’s about shape, Shape and SHAPE. Which is what Matt was saying.
Agree but until this super amateur(me) wears out a couple flow benches. I'm not going to be able to learn this "shape,Shape and SHAPE"!!!! I will learn a lot faster with a flow bench then not.
Even, good or WJ, had to learn on a flow bench to learn. It would have taken him a lot longer to get were he got with out on.

It's a tool just like every thing else.
Sad for me, is that i won't have enough power in my garage, that is just starting to be build, for at least another year....or two:(
To fire up and calibrate my new flow bench.:rolleyes:

No videos here........ but if I were to do them, they would be more along the lines of “infotainment” instead of infomercial.
Something fun, like the Nicks Garage videos and Engine Masters show.
Not really technical, but fun to watch for those interested in that type of thing.

Shortly after I first started posting on line(20-ish years ago), I would do some threads about porting 906 heads, or the RPM heads when they first came out.
Or like a 500hp and 600hp 440 build.
Some of those got put in the tech archives over on moparts.
Those were my infomercials.

However this guy has a lot of good info that i can apply to my racing and this particular one, he talked about porting and flow benches.......well kinda:)
And i thing it fits this discussion quit well.

Another very smart guy who puts some good info out there. I’m way behind watching his stuff.

As for the flow bench...there is nothing wrong with using a flow bench as long as you know it’s limitations. If you port for flow and not shape, if you just do basic tests and if you don’t think of anything and everything you can to test, you’ll just fall in love with the flow numbers.

Just as important (arguably more important if you want to pick the pepper out of the fly poop) is the math involved to calculate the needed MCS area and such. That’s really important.

It doesn’t matter like some people want it to. Just like flow numbers. Since this stuff has been published for so many years that it becomes the de facto way to select a head or carb.
 
I had to laugh when that little stock 318 port made 411 lbs at the wheels here:

Dyno shop tested 318

Even funnier is when they soften the head because its detonating considering quench increases resistance to detonation.
 
Here's why port volume doesn't matter that much. Well, first, I think it does matter as you get closer to the valve. If you have a big valve and a small port (bowl) that's no good. And too big a bowl is no good, either. So we can say bowl volume, and shape, it pretty significant

In any case, the volume of a port is measurement that stops at the intake face (on the intake side) and the exhaust face on the other side. From engine to engine, that configuration can change greatly. If you think my engine is a dog because the port volume is too small, I'll mill 1/2" off the intake manifold and add 1/2" to the port and you'll love it then, right?

That’s right. Valve angle and port length have different volumes at the same cross section. Look at a Hemi. It pours next to nothing but the cross section is big. That’s why you can use port volume to pick a cylinder head. Or flow numbers.

I'm sure it mattered to Darin Morgan until he got his wet flow bench and saw what the fuel was doing......

It took me a couple of years to apply the stuff I leaned at his two day class. When I started airspeed testing it took me 1.5 years to know what to look for and how to change it. 1000’s of flow test and I still learn something on every head I work on. It took me even longer to think about each port and it’s relationship and position not only where it dumps into a cylinder but how an intake dumps into it. Three pieces of the puzzle turned into one.
