I installed this kit on My 70 Dart with Doug's and it fits quite nice. It is all clamped and I want to weld all the joints.

What are you guys doing as far the rear? Mine is full length out past the bumper .

Are you welding the entire thing? I am trying to think ahead if the back exhaust would have to come out for any reason.
If I weld it all, I could un bolt at the header flanges and un bolt the hangers at the rear, but couldn't remove it all due to the rear end. Although I'm not sure why I would need to remove it completely.

Thoughts?

If you have an h-pipe, make sure it is flanged. If you have an x-pipe, you need a flange on both pipes on at least one end.
You need access so you can remove trans or driveshaft, and you need to be able to separate or remove the sections. With enough flanges, weld 'er up!

Well I don't have an X or H pipe. So I do t have to worry about that.

It’s a semi-generic kit so you’ll have to cut the tailpipes to length. On my Duster I had to cut almost a foot out, most of it came out of the tailpipes but a some came out of the mid pipes. It’s the same kit for the 108” and 111” wheelbase cars so my Duster being 108” it wasn’t surprising to me that it needed a few inches out of the mid pipes. I just put the mufflers where I wanted them and adjusted accordingly.

I weld everything except the connections to the mufflers, I leave those clamped. Gives me an easier place to break the system for working on the transmission or stuff around the trunk or fuel tank. Also gives a spot for the condensation to exit the system before it goes up and over the axle.

I like the summit kit, for the price it’s hard to beat the quality. It does require a little tweaking, but nothing extreme. Again, for the price I think I that’s perfectly appropriate.

Oh yeah, it's all installed and fits great. I think that welding all except the mufflers is a good idea. I do still have to cut the tail pipes and add some tips.

I installed mine the same was a 72bluNblu. I also clamped the tails to the "U" that go over the axle to make adjustments easier. Where I clamped, I used band clamps not U bolts. When it was hot, I went back with a breaker bar and tightened them.

i ran a bolted summit kit for 5 years, then when it had to come off...i unbolted it

i dont see a need to weld it

There's like 12 exhaust clamps in the system if you don't weld anything. They're ugly and they get snagged on stuff. Plus, they pretty much all leak after awhile. Sure, you can run the system without welding it but it's just a cleaner looking system if you do weld it.

Once the system is fit and everything is where it needs to be there's no reason to have the over axle and tail pipe sections be separate. Or there to be three separate pieces from the headers to the mufflers what with the header reducer and then the 1st and 2nd midpipe sections. Welding it so there's a one piece midpipe and one piece over the axle to the tails with connections only at the headers and mufflers makes it a nice clean system with fewer places to leak. And still enough sections to break out if you need to repair something.

Just a note if you weld it. Weld as much as possible in position, then take it down to complete the rest. If you drop it all first and then weld it, the heat will pull some pieces out of whack for sure.

and obviously full float it all the way to the back. I had a idiot (at a muffler shop!) tack my Anza tip mount bracket to the frame for some reason. It lasted about 5 minutes as the transverse motor just ripped it off when it rocked on acceleration.

Plumkrazee70, did it take a lot of work to match this kit to your Doug’s? I already have a set of Doug’s and I’m considering ordering this kit for my ‘67 Dart 318/904. I would love your input.

I have Doug’s on my Duster with the Summit kit. Adapting the summit kit to the Doug’s is super easy, everything you need is in the kit and it all fits well. Other than shortening the mid pipes a few inches and the tailpipes a few inches I didn’t really do anything. And the Dart is longer in the wheel base so I would bet less shortening would be needed.

Thanks for the reply, that’s good to hear. It’s my first go at headers/dual exhaust.

No worries! It’s not that bad at all. I think technically the summit kit says it’s designed to fit their headers. But it fits the Doug’s just fine. It takes a little playing around, rotating the pipes a little here and there to get everything where you want it to be. But I didn’t do any changing of angles or anything like that, just a little trimming.
