A lap joint shouldn't need slits. A butt joint are two pipes the same size. A lap joint is a pipe with a inside diameter the same as the outside diameter of the joining pipe. One pipe fits inside the other and the band clamp is formed for the 2 different OD pipes.

I use these clamps on two of my cars and they work perfectly. I will use them for any exhaust connection that has room for them in the future. I had to remove the exhaust on one of the cars and they come apart and reassemble so much nicer with the band style clamps.
